I was using a BadElf external GPS, set to 10hz. I believe the .5 to .6g readings I was getting to be accurate - those tires were hardened up.
When HLT worked for me it was fine. But sometimes the display would exit back to the home screen, resulting in no in-car feedback, and a couple of times it stopped recording the session altogether. I suppose it's possible the 10hz gps rate combined with the other activity was swamping the phone; it's a 3gs, so dual core, but not as fast as a 4/4s.

Not much value in anything past 720/30 if you are posting on YT, IMO. Even with YT's compression, the files still look great. Even better on Vimeo where you can upload an uncompressed 720/30 MP4 off a gopro.
Bigger files than that get big in a hurry. We chose 720/30 because it allows us to record an entire 4hr enduro in HD on one 32GB card and battery bac on our Hero2's.
1080p/60fps looks awesome on my TV at home but I just about never view them that way nor does anyone else.

GoPro pretty much owns the video-only market, and you still need to turn it on. There are now data acquisition units that sync with the GoPro, although I don't know if they turn the GoPro units on and off automatically or not. That alone is a feature that you don't know you NEED until you're trapped in a harness.

I velcroed a GoPro WiFi remote to my dashboard. Turn the Wifi remote on before you strap in, then turn the camera on with a couple button touches when you roll onto the track.
I would kill for a GoPro backpack that turned the camera on every time my IQ3 was recording, though.

That's exactly how I do it. I did shell out for the GoPro cig lighter to USB adapter, since the cameras are picky about how much amperage they need to record and charge at the same time and I didn't want to hassle with it. Picked up a 15ft USB cord on Amazon, drilled a hole in the side of the case, and plugged it all in. Works like a charm.

Go Pro wired remote
You could order all the parts and then spend a few tedious hours soldering them in (like I did), or you could just get it from this guy...

What I want is something that will automatically start the camera when my IQ3 is recording - totally automated and brainless (just like me).

Note to everyone here:
5hz GPS is great if you are a ------. My 10hz numbers are just as accurate as the official timing and give better data rather than lines telling you when you turn the wheel and when you touch the pedals. I tried to make a 5hz work, and it was okay, but left me wanting more.

for my other car with G2X and Gopro. I use the new Gopro iphone app. you can start/stop/change setting recording using your iphone AND you can watch whatever your gopro sees on your iphone screen. with 3 seconds delay.... great for aiming gopro

it is called Traqmate + Gopro. it automatically starts recording when Traqmate starts.
