ITT: Weight loss, throttle body style
So I have been fighting an annoyingly high idle lately, with no settings on MS helping. I figured I could fight it mechanically, and after realizing how much of a simple and quick weight loss it could be, I took me some pictures to show y'all.
Before shot, with the crappy TPS sensor, idle valve controller, and the little shock thingy that keeps the throttle from closing too fast.
Started with this:
Then made this in about 20 minutes:
Took all this off:
And ended up with this:
The actual weight loss is unknown, as I don't have a good enough scale. That idle valve is not light though. That picture also doesn't show the hose and clamps I took off that went from the intercooler pipe to the idle valve, or the little bit of the throttle wheel I removed. The plate is .125" steel, sealed with the valve's "d" shaped o-ring. All this is completely reversible sans getting a new throttle cable wheel, and could happen in around 30 minutes, which is what it took to get all this done.
Results: I don't think this is related, but it started and idled without any gas pedal input for the first time since I put the MS in I think. Idled a little low but I haven't adjusted the throttle stop yet. It does dip a bit when you let off, and if I floored it and let off quickly it really wanted to die, but that was starting at the 500rpm idle I haven't adjusted yet. If I turned on my brights, blower to lvl 4, and put the wipers on lvl 2 simultaneously, it would kill it. Again, this is with a cold car idling at 500rpm.
Verdict: My bay looks cleaner, my car is lighter, and my idle isn't 2000rpm, I'm happy.
If you're a crazy weight ****, you could chop off quite a few little bits of aluminum from the TPS sensor and shock thingy, as well as the end of the throttle rod. I'm planning on adding VTPS eventually, so I left that there.

Oh I'm sure it was dead, but why replace it? I don't have AC or PS draining the idle. Beyond a slight dip when I let off, this seems to work fine. Like I said though, it's all reversable.

I'm curious as to how you got it to start without throttle input when cold. Maybe I just need to adjust my ASE more.
Thats pretty cool curly. Now you can clean up your wiring like mine. I dont have anything at the front of the intake manifold plugged in, just cut that loom of wires off and tucked everything up under the fender lip.

I have no idea how or why it started and idled without a jab of the throttle. Especially considering how low the idle was, and how cold the engine was. Granted it was 80* outside, but it hadn't ran all day. Give this little mod a shot, see if it helps you at all. Don't you have TPS wire up there?

I should have the CAD linework tucked away for the block off plates on both the TB and the Intake (1.6 only) if anyone is interested and have access to water/laser cutters.
I did this mod a few weeks back and had the plates water jetted out of scrap 6061 - even spent the time to remove the unnecessary bosses on the TB and polish it up.
Can't comment on how it runs as the cars tracking to not be back together until next summer - the check list keeps growing and my savings account is merely sustaining itself.

Thanks, although it looks like you got rid of your throttle body completely, otherwise it would be helpful to you.
thasac, the car may not be running until next summer, but you can still take pictures of your throttle body. Or ban, your choice.

i did the same thing on my galant vr4's t-body. the iac had frozen (rust) and it would idle at 1500rpm. i tried another one from an old eclipse gsx i had and that one was dead too, so i figured hell with it and made a plate, also sealed like yours with the factory o-ring. ran fine ever since.
