Emissions stuff removal
 

California-spec '2000 NB1. Running on MS. Non-street car. What can be safely removed to get rid of the charcoal canister and the associated maze of tubes, lines and solenoids?

If anyone has pics, that would be great. So far I've only seen Australian thread on it and their canister and lines are different from Cal-spec cars, it seems.

Seriously though, with ms you can junk everything on the right side of the engine bay basically. Also you can simplify the fuel feed line by removing the secondary fuel dampener and chuck all the charcoal/evap mumbo jumbo

Look at pics of emilio's na racecars. They've got nothing there.

With MS, none of that stuff is powered anyway. Buh-bye!

Ah, guys, I've seen the "after" pictures. I need to understand what needs to be removed, plugged, etc, specifically. Too many vacuum lines and solenoids there for my taste.

Also, this is CSP autocross car so we have a rulebook a thousand pages long. But emissions can be yanked out.

Basically, remove it all. Cap anything that's a vacuum leak.

As some of you may know, the fuel dampner was removed on that 10ae I worked on. Is that a common emissions thing to remove? Or is it actually vital to the fuel system?

As for the OP, start with the EGR, its a heavy metal valve, and hot exhaust pipe behind the engine. Ditch it now!

its not an emissions thing, its just a bulky bracket witha tiny dampener on it that doesn't affect much and can be removed to clean up the bay.

Not so fast, guys. I have to see if brackets can be removed in CSP (somethign tells me that's a "NO").

Remove and cap - that's what I was thinking. But I see at least 2 solenoids associated with charcoal canister. One I understand, the second I don't. Any ideas?

And then you ask about some random solenoids that no one knows what the heck you're talking about cause you're going to need to provide pictures or diagrams to show us which ones you want to keep or remove and what exactly your question is in regards to them, since we already answered your question that you can remove them and cap off whatever lines or fittings they connect to.

So................Are you still not seeing where this is going?

(patiently) OK, let's try again. What, specifically, can be removed on a 2000 California-spec car? What needs to be plugged, re-routed, etc? Pointers to specific parts, pictures, etc would be what I'm looking for. Telling me that "everything can be removed" doesn't qualify as a helpful answer.

I am seeing where you are going. Hopefully, away from this thread for a day or two? I've owned this NB and raced it (autocross in CSP) for the last 11 years. Generally, Miata race people are a good bunch. Not without exception, but I'm just hoping that you are simply having a bad day and had to vent.

And you have not learned the rules enough to know what you can and cannot do in all this time?

For a completely different rulebook I have removed "allofit" and only keep one hose from the tank vent pipe which I lead to the airbox to reduce the gas smell a bit.
But since I convert back to stock for inspections I have kept all of the harness bits, if you can hack up yours or not is up to you to know or find out.

To assume CSP when no rules are mentioned is a bit self centered...

You're asking a CSP-specific question in a forum section where most of the talk is geared toward large-track use, either TT or wheel to wheel, with 98% of those classes allowing full removal of anything non-essential in the engine bay. So most people here do not need to worry about what solenoid X is associated with; if the car will run without it, we remove it.
It's going to be your burden to either go through the rulebook for your own class and figure out what you can/cannot remove, or seek the answers on a SOLO-specific forum where you'll find probably more people with specific experience modifying a miata for that autocross class.

On a slightly unrelated note, "can remove solenoid X but must keep erroneous bracket Y" is exactly why I never built my car to a specific autox class even when I was doing a lot of it years ago..

It's fairly clear that there are issues with reading comprehension here today.

No, I'm not asking CSP-specific questions. I can remove emissions equipment per CSP rules. I can not just go and hack brackets at will. I understand that autocross rules might be foreign concept to most people, but they are what they are.

Again, slowly. If anyone has specific description and/or photos on what tubes go where around charcoal canister, what solenoids serve what function, that is the information I'm looking for. This forum might not be the best place to ask, granted. But since a number of people here have experience in removing this equipment, I think I'm right in assuming that they know what the equipment does, what can be safely taken out and how. Though Ryan is probably very right in "if it runs without, just remove it" track mentality. Not so in AX, unfortunately.

PS. Hornetball, you are certainly welcome to both hold and caress whatever you want, there's nothing wrong with that. I certainly salute you for being brave and courageous and coming out in this specific topic, whatever your reasons are.

SCCA autocross rules aren't that difficult. If the rule says SPECIFICALLY that you can remove an item, then remove it. If it does not specifically say you can remove it, then you can't. Don't try to interpret anything, that's where you will get into trouble, or placed in a higher class.

When you open your hood (assuming the OEM hood), there's a vacuum diagram sticker on the underside that will have your car's configuration. They tend to be accurate and complete and should help you identify your components.

ok, if you want to know what it does. Here is an easy way to figure it out:
Google: Miata vacuum diagram

Tons and tons of diagrams and info on vacuum system. You may also insert other terms like "charcoal canister" to get more specific info. Click the "Web" tab at the top to get to search links that may have wordy details.

For what its worth, anything touching the charcoal canister can be removed, including the "map" sensor if you are using a non-stock ECU. This obviously doesn't include the fuel lines.
