"First" SuperMiata S1 race at BRP, turbo realiability !!

This past weekend, is kinda (enough cars) first S1 race ever !! My orange S1 (not the fastest, but best looking by far, 2nd track day), Andrew Kidd (built early 2017) and Emilio Cervantes (first track day) all performed without mechanical. I never jacked up my car once, or checked anything other than oil, only issue I had was brake which isn't S1 power train related. Emilio's car performed brilliantly, and Andrew's had nada issue. To be honest, this was a surprise to me. I originally thought first few race weekend will be won by whomever don't break My water temp max was 197F, oil temp max was 235F this past weekend, this is less than my S2 and S3 !!!

Most importantly, S1 weren't going slow either !! at BRP, it looks like S1 is ~7 seconds faster than S2. Andrew clocked a 53s BW13 in 80+F weather... I am pretty sure with more setup time (but mostly more balls), that delta is gonna be ~9 second by next year, into 51s comes winter time. and BRP (Buttonwillow) isn't a power track, only a couple of short straights.

kudo to Trackspeed Engineering spec turbo kit. Turbo Miata world has come a long way since the day of failing turbo studs (my first Miata was a turbo).

kinda of a joke, kinda not. They are now reliable enough that upping power is feasible. I proposed to come out to BRP in the winter, arm with fresh tires. Keep cranking up the boost till they go 1:49.99. Then immediately dyno at 7s Only (at the track). whatever the number it makes becomes the NEW S1 power cap. We rename S1 > S150 (Sub 1:50), S2 (Sub 2)

This isn't a promo post. I really am shocked how well S1 worked...... whole weekend, I kept telling Andrew Kidd how shocked I was, he replied: "I am shocked that you are shocked that turbo Miata can run reliably"

Awesome! So cool to see this series actually happening.

Now to find a job in CA to come join in on the fun.......

What kind of boost/power are you guys running right now?

I feel like one of those cars does not fit in and is probably running a bit more power then whats allowed in the class.

Supermiata allows all if they are orange. Otherwise power cap is 220whp (plus power under the curve limit)

Very cool to witness the evolution of the supermiata series. S1 sure looks to be a great platform.

Hard caps are:
220whp
210wtq

How much boost it requires to hit those numbers varies between head/fuel/compression/etc. Swapping to the 'small boost' wastegate can is normal. ~6-10psi is all it took in Bullet.

Congrats to all, and especially to Andrew for making this reality possible.

Kudos to Andrew for having the passion to follow his dream to make this hotside hardware a reality. The basic idea for this goes back over a decade. It's a tiny little niche market and Andrew is a very smart guy. That he chose to focus his talents and resources, kind of betting his near future on this earns a little bow and tip of the hat. Chapeau.

I am not overstating it to say that S1 is possible because of this hardware. Expanding onto the entire S1 build requires a debt of gratitude to the entire Miata community. We have all broken turbo Miatas at one point or another, shared our failure analysis, come up with cost effective solutions and most importantly, shared the information here and other spots around the Miataverse. So yeah, being able to build Bullet, roll it off the trailer with our best guess at setup and be the fastest Miata in morning practice and 3rd fastest car on track is amazing. Well it's amazing to me now but going forward, it shouldn't be. The same ease and confidence with which we have been able to build S2's "95R" clones. just roll off the trailer and be perfect has been granted to turbo Miata race cars.
