First track day – tires choice
 

I already have 2 sets of the wheels:

1. 205/40/17 BF Goodrich Sport Comp2 approx. 80% threads left, 17x7 rims

2. 225/45/15 Hankook RS3 approx. 70% threads left, 15x8 rims

My first track day will be with instructor in the beginner group.

I was suggested start with BF Goodrich and change to more sticky tires since 2nd or 3rd event.

Makes sense?

sounds like a good plan to me.

I tracked on BF Sport Comp2's (205x45 r16's) and they were fine. Really difficult to flat-spot which will be great for your first day (serious).

Run the 15's. RS3's aren't slicks, they're fine to learn with IMO.

Thread is something you sew with. Tires have tread, no "h".

I really don't think it matters, do the track day with whichever is most convenient.

I agree. Your first track day you shouldn't be going fast enough for it to matter.

I ran RS3s on my first track day an lived to tell about it. You'll be fine. Might as well use the stuff more optimized for a track day IMHO.

English is not my first language.

I'd go with the lesser BFG tires. Less grip helps a beginner figure out what the car is doing and how to control it better. I remember there even being a bit of a curve going from Max Performance tires (class up from the BFG Comp2s) to extreme performance tires.

Run the 15's, sell the 17's and put the money towards another set of wheels, get 15x9. You'll be better off in the long run with a dedicated set of track wheels when you start to pick up some pace and move to different tires like an NT01 or RC1.
