G loadings....what is good, bad etc
 
Finally starting to play with my Aim MXL Data acquisition and just venturing in to the G loadings etc prior to switching from the NT01 to the Hankook Z214 tyres.

I figure if I review my history and get some baselines on the past couple of years NT01 use, I should be able to see and quantify the new grippier tyres. I also hope to be able to see hard figures from when the tyre starts to lose grip. Presuming the Hankook will heat cycle out at a rate quicker than the NT01 has....

So the question for anyone running Data acquisition and G loadings....what is a good number for a non aero mx5?

Maybe list the numbers your getting and the basic car setup especially wheel size and tyres...for relevance.

I am not sure I am reading mine right but initial investigation seems that I am getting 1.29 - 1.30 max lateral load, will also post braking G when I get more used to this horrible Race Studio 2 software. (need to spend some time watching tutorials, its far from instinctive!)

I am also hoping this thread will provide some base lines from people with Aero to see just how big a step up G loading gets with Aero.....

Hopefully none of this is a trade secret, secret squirrel type stuff......

vbox/2350lb no driver/15x9/205 hoosier sm7 (10'ish cycles)/no aero/koni race-800#/450#/low-med. speed track/1.35G steady.
-this was last year, pre-cage. data got me obsessive/compulsive so I sold the unit.

Irrelevant unless it's on the same day, same surface, same ambient and surface temps with or without direct sunlight. The same tire might average .15g difference just from the sun going behind clouds 10 minutes after the first reading, Focus on getting the most form the new tire then compare lap times.

Also, some tires may have the same peak grip but vastly different behavior on track. An example is the previous generation 200tw EHP (Extreme High Performance) over a 100tw DOT race tire ( RC-1/RA-1/NT01/R888 GG). The street and race tires might have about the same peak lateral grip but .2~.3 less braking grip. So lap times might be 1~2s apart.

How it gets to whatever G loading can be pretty different too, though maybe not nearly as much as bias plies vs radials, for example.

No, you're correct. Some tires will brake well and turn well not not be good at combining both. That shows up in driver feedback and data. Driver has to do their thing differently to compensate and car set up is a wee bit different.

The point is never try to get any tire to work like any other tire. Pay attention to the data and try to use that tire for the lowest lap times it can achieve. Come into each tire tuning/learning curve with an open mind.

Will swapping suspension have any bearing on the data (my imminent move from Koni race to Xidas).....I mean know it will change the data values (hopefully in good ways) but I presume you must be able to use the historic data for the same tyre/same type/same track to a certain degree?

Suspension tuning likewise, otherwise it would be pointless having the data to work with in the first place wouldn't it? i.e. is there any relevance and historical reference to the data?

or purely just long experience to factor in all the reference points...lap time, driver feel, weather/temp, loadings etc
