I have a mazdaspeed box. The shot-peened claim has long been debated, but if it matters, my gears are still intact. AMSOil MTG.

I think your best bet will be the TII swap or a for big power, Find a G-force GSR four speed. I have a 2002 6speed and it hasnt broken any teeth yet but my 330ftlbs doesnt come in untill 6800 rpm

I could have sworn you guys (sav) had said that the quaife gear set was rubbish due to sticking it into a shitty 5spd case. PPG used to offer 6spd straight cut dog sets.

The trouble with that T101a based 4 speed is that 4th gear is direct drive, aka its 1:1. So you need an interesting rear end to run it. Of course when you're getting into the 300+ ftlbs of torque area, maybe a change of rear end isnt a bad idea.

It all depends on the usage. I think for road racing you would want more gears regardless. Unless you have 500+ ftlbs (V8) i cant see roadracing with a 4spd.
For drag or drifting 4speed all the way.

As long as the ratio's are good and you don't do standing starts, you would be fine with a 4 speed. You just might have a stupid long 1st which would be a b$%#@ to get moving.

If the first was between a 5 speed 2nd and a 6 speed 3rd. Would it really be that bad? You would have to slip clutch/spin tires to launch quickly from a stop and you might want to winch it on the trailer. But from the few times I've spaced out on the street and left the stock miata in 2nd and pulled away from a stop, it wasnt that bad.

I use only 3-5 on most tracks and would not like to shift more often.

I do not think an FI car would have a problem.

I fail to see how forced induction makes any sort of difference (unless you plan to leave every stoplight on boost).

It shouldnt matter from a stop light if you're trying to drive the car like a normal human being. Next time you drive a miata just try to accelerate at the same pace as everyone else, but pretend 1st doesnt exist. You rev a couple rpms higher and slip the clutch an extra half a second taking off and the car just feels a little bit slower until you get to 5-10 mph when you'd normally be shifting into 2nd anyways. Without a doubt it will end up reducing the life of the clutch.

The problem is that a gear shorter than the 6-speed's 3rd gear is too short for a 300wtq road race car to make any use of on a road course, and leaving that car with only 3 gears isn't acceptable.

A 4-speed T101-based setup would work on a road race car that was winched onto a trailer and was geared for 80-105-135-170mph in 1-2-3-4th. Paddock crawling would be all but impossible, but it would work on track.

This is why I think the 6-speeds and the Quaife boxes have the gearing down pat, and any custom solution should match those ratios within 2mph. The 6-speed gives two crawler gears, the Quaife gives one, but both boxes give 4 usable ratios on track.

Is there any hope for making a 6 speed shift better? I have never had any issues on track with other cars but this 6 speed is tough!

Some 6-speeds are better than others. MSM boxes seem to shift the best out of all of them. It takes some getting used to, so just slow down your shifts until you stop missing them and then slowly ramp the speed back up. I don't miss shifts in 6-speeds any more than I do in 5-speeds.

Not sure if anyone has seen this company? I've delt with them for FWD G-series stuff but not anything RWD. The dogleg 5speed definatly has me intrigued, seems like much less misshifts would be possble. But being as 5th is 1:1 not sure its usable... They also have dog and syncro engagments for the 6 speed too

I was referring to Handy Man's post where the game involved a standing start in race conditions.

Higher horsepower per weight cars need taller starting line gear ratios than lower powered cars to maximize their 60' potential.

I am doing better myself but when a noob gets behind the wheel it's zing city. After replacing this motor I would like to make the tranny more user friendly. If not I guess I have to be stingy with seat time.

Thats super easy. Miata roadster shifter takes care of that.

I looked at CP boost before. Parts made in mexico, lead time of whenever they get around to it. twice as expensive as quaife. It only make sense if you need custom ratios.
