Headlight covers

I have been looking for headlight replacement covers for my Miata NB race car.
Replacements (substitutes, really) are available for other brands of cars , but I can not find anything for the Miata.

Given the cost and complexity of the headlight assembly on a Miata, the lack of need on a race car, and the probability of damage to them, I am a bit surprised I can't find anything.

Am I just missing them on some website somewhere?
Anyone have any ideas? Maybe a thread on how to make your own? Given the complex curves, they don't seem entirely easy to make in the garage.

I asked around in a different group a month or two ago and the only lead I got was Flatout Motorsports, https://www.flatout-motorsports.com/. This was for my NB1. Reached out to them, here's the reply:

Yes we have them, they are black gelcoat, they are the same shape as a factory headlight without the rubber gasket so there is a little bit of a gap around the headlight to the bodywork, good for letting air into the intake area. They have two tabs hanging off of them to bolt them to the factory spot on the top, the bottom kind of hangs, I never really made anything to hold onto the bottom of it but they stay pretty secure.

$250 each, $500 plus tax and shipping for a pair.
Unfortunately I can't give you a review. The price was high enough that I just hacked off the covers from my stock lights. Might be a reasonable option if you can find a set of stock lights in a junkyard locally. Took 30 minutes of my time with a Dremel, and they fit like... stock.

Nine lives teased some on Instagram back in October. Haven’t seen them for sale yet.

Ya, I hear you on that price, might as well source junkyard lights if at all possible.

Good info, thanks. I might contact them to learn if they plan to follow through.
Nice looking WRL car, by the way.
It is kind of a drag with the rules creep I saw you complained about. We have the same problem with our RX7 in Chumpcar, early rules forced expensive or time consuming solutions that were actually cheaper to solve with illegal race parts, which are now allowed. Sort of annoying, but the endurance racing is enough fun to compensate.

My car had some stock lenses in it when I bought it, but I destroyed one of them so I baked some used headlights with cracked tabs in the oven at 250 for 5-10 minutes, pulled the lens off, spray painted the inside, and used aluminum strap to mount them.

9lives added the covers to their site. I just ordered a pair along with some gurney flaps. $90 is worth it to keep from cutting up a decent set of headlights IMO.

The WRL car is going to serve as a track toy this year while I get it sorted. Lots of parts went on in 2020. I’ll scratch the endurance racing itch by running with some buddies in Lemons in the meantime.
