Hornetball's First Track Day!
:party::party::party:
I signed up for a track day with the "Driver's Edge" at MSR-Cresson and got put on the alternate list. Wednesday night, got a call that a spot was open if I wanted it. The Miata's roll bar wasn't in yet, so I sub'd the Pontiac G8. Mad flurry of car maintenance, brake flushing and tech inspection ensued! Saturday AM and there I was. So, yeah, I was the track :noob: with the automatic 4-door sedan! Car actually held up to 4 25-minute sessions really well. Only complaint (besides obvious heft) was the damn transmission. It would abrubtly downshift and upshift at the most inopportune times. So, my head is still spinning. What a hoot! Had no idea that 25 minutes could pass so quickly. Instructor said I was ahead of the curve . . . pretty sure she was referring to my early apexes. Get to go again tomorrow. OK . . . time to bash the track newb!! :noob::noob::noob: |
I wont' bash you because I've never been to the track. Good luck!
|
Signed up for my first in the V8 Miata 8/31. Have done them on bikes but I was told I still need to do school for the car.
Sooo, the Midwest Mustang club is holding an event, School, 4 hours on road course and then 4 hours on the track's adjacent drag strip. Total cost? $65. :giggle: Regular track days they get $195 just for the school. Mostly doing it for the signoff as I have only driven the car a total of 100 street miles since it was built and I'm not going to push it hard. Really just getting school out of the way for the SAAB next year. |
I opened this expecting to see that you finally got a rollbar! I am disappoint. Jk, track driving is VERY addicting so be careful ;)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1374453840 Think of this as the follow-on to the V8 Supercars race (last time I saw you IIRC): https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1374453832 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1374454447 |
Welcome to the addiction.
Eagles Canyon has an event Aug 10th. A little longer drive for you than MSR-C. |
Eric, it was nice meeting you at the track. I didn't put two and two together when I saw your car.

Hope you and the missus have separate bank accounts. |
I named my Miata "The Retirement Account" as in, "Yes honey I put money into the retirement account this month".
|
LOL.
The Pontiac's tires are done. Wear strips on all four and some light chunking on the front-passenger side. They were close before I went (barely passed tech), so I was actually expecting this. I just priced new tires for the Poncho. Honey? At least I got my money's worth. :D Interesting thing is that the front-passenger side had the most brake dust and the worst tire wear . . . but we were going CW. ?? I was grossly overdriving the huge beast in the slow sections. Go slow to go fast was totally lost on this :noob:. I got better towards the end, but still. Total hack job. Humbling experience. |
Congrats! Now get the Miata out there. Then, you can try and not think of improvements to the car. You can try ...

But I hear you. Looks like an extremely slippery slope from the car improvement standpoint. First order of business would be safety and track reliability. |
 MOAR SEAT TIME!!

Welcome to the fun. I was out at Cresson with the Drivers Edge last weekend, too, instructing. I remember the G8, it is silver, right?
It was a nice weekend, weather stayed decent. I had a bunch of fun in my '99: Have you signed up for the September event yet? :) robert |

I'm going to try and hit up the August event at Eagle's canyon that EricJ mentioned (if I can find time to get the roll bar in). Like Mobius said, it's all about getting quality seat time with an instructor at this point. With a two month lay-off, I'd probably be starting over. |
Driver's Edge blows, run with apex or nasa. ECR is running a open day on 8/10 that I'm instructing. Also a sam park ford open day at ecr on 9/7 that I am also working. I know MSR is closer and I would rather go there then ECR but the group putting on the event is as important as the location.
|
Definitely going to try to make the 8/10 at ECR.
I'm new enough that the only things that blow are my turbo and my driving! |
I hate this thread.
I was skipping this season to justify 949/TSE brakes and XIDAs. You are tempting me to throw it on the CC and get back out in September. |

LOL! Like a heroin junkie saying "I think I'll skip this hit." Doesn't work, especially with all the other junkies saying "Dude! C'mon!"
|
Just ONE MORE!
|
I am starting to get the bug to do track days, this thread is making the itch hard to ignore.
I have a feeling that doing your track day in the Miata will make you sleepless at night yearning for more. Lucky dog. |

You should probably do Miatas @ Hallett next, still my favorite track though TWS is starting to creep-up on it.

Planning to. That will be the weekend after my next DE event, so I'll have some idea of the Miata's track reliability before going.
As long as your tires/brakes and fluid/front hubs are good, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. |

Hopefully after I finish my paint job off, I'm only a few safety items away from my first track day in my Miata. Its been years since I've done one (back in my AE86 Corolla days) and now I'm itching to do one in a faster car.

You need to finish reassembling your Miata and come out with me and sixshooter in October. I know that it cannot come soon enough and I think I will be doing 5-8 track events a year starting next year. It really is like a drug.
|
Or buy a "nearly there" complete car that represents a serious discount to NAV that can be tracked to death as it sits now and can then be a great platform for more power if you decide it needs it.
Then, you can leave your current car as a shiny drag car. For maximum effect, the second Miata should be black. :naughty: (Since that picture, the car now has low-profile square pop-up headlights and factory-style front turn signals). |

That explains why I saw Eric sign up for a BMW Auto-X over on dfwmiata.com.
July and Aug trackdays have been sparse. Only two days each month. MSR-C 7/20-21 and TWS 8/24-25. Sept looks fun, 9/7 ECR, 9/13-14 Hallett, 9/20-22 TWS & 9/28 a TT w/ PCA at Mineral Wells |
Street Tire Torture!
Listen to those bitches scream!:party::party:

Looks like great fun! This weekend I will be in Albuquerque, NM for Miata Mayhem III at NAPA Speedway! I can't wait!
|
Total hoot. As a bonus, the Miata has been 100% reliable. So nice to just get out there and drive.

Been awhile since I've posted in this thread.
Anyways, I've degraded to a complete, drooling/shaking/need my next fix track junkie. I joined MSR-C in November. Bought a second Miata to dedicate to the effort in December. And on and on. Just finished another track weekend with Driver's Edge. Yellow group now. Making good progress. It was cold this weekend, high today was 36. A slick track is a good teacher. My goal this weekend (besides driving) was to build and test my lap timer/data logger/video logger. Simple setup consisting of an iPod Touch, a Dual XGPS150A and the CMS LapTimer Pro app. I built my own bracket to hold the iPod and GPS. It bolts between my rear view mirror and windwhield header. It worked great. Some pics: The end of the 1/8"x3" aluminum strap is drilled to match the mirror's mount. This is the mount for older NA's where the mirror screws into the windshield header. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1392003591 A couple of pictures of the finished aluminum strap. An iPod case will be riveted to one surface and the GPS will be tie-wrapped to the flat at the end. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1392003591 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1392003591 Installed. To finish, the strap is bent towards the windshield and then a furniture "Elevator Bolt" with a foam pad is placed against the windshield to triangulate. Adjust the nuts so that the assembly is spring-loaded against the windshield and the iPod is level and square for good G-readings. Simple and sturdy. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1392049834 How it looks from the driver's seat: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1392003591 Here's some laps from today for your enjoyment! |
Personal best today on the MSR-C 1.7CCW: 1:29.2.
Plus, I did it with a blown engine! (Sigh) Read all about it: https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...6/#post1113926 Just wait 'till the car's healthy again! |
