How much time do you give up running 225s on a 8" wide rim instead of a 9"?

15 X 9" vs 15 X 8". What kind of time differences. Are there other reasons to run a 9" rim other than time? such as wear or how the car feels?

ALL OF IT

No but seriously, can you get any more vague than that?
If you're not trolling, go check out the 15x10 6UL thread, I'm pretty sure Sav and Emilio mention the difference between 15x9 vs 15x10 as well as 15x9 vs 15x8

I'm also certain we've had at least 2 other threads about this same topic in the wheel/tire section.

225s on an 8 feel like ---- on the track with tire-flex, I'd rather run a 205 on that wheel, I'd probably be faster from comfort.

If you are serious about tracking your car - go wider. If you just want to have fun once in a while - 8" will be just fine.

Yup. Depends on the car and course but we usually see about a second on a 2 minute + road course, less on a shorter one. Autocross is less, maybe .4~.6 typically.

General rule of thumb (my rule): For maximum performance from radials, choose wheel width at least as wide as tire section width. Ignore bead width, tread width and manufacturers (lawyers) recommendations.

I appreciate it! I could't find it, but I'm not a youngster like you!

I had tried squeezing a set of 225-45 nitto's on a 7" set of spec miata rims (because that's what I had). The results were not optimal. I found that you had to start the tire out with much lower tire pressures as the middle of the tire would bulge when it gained air pressure and would overheat, making the car skate after 10 laps or so... next season, 9" rims, or 205-50 rubber.

I never realized how much tires move around on the rim. I guess stretching the tire helps minimize this.

The V8 Supercars series sometimes puts a camera on a front wheel. Amazing how much the contact patch distorts, especially under braking.

You get some good shots on F1 cars also, when they do the closeups / slo-mos of one going through a corner. The rears probably shift at least a half inch either way.

I just ordered the 9" 6ULs. You guys have convinced me

Mobius 08-04-2012 06:33 PM

RS3's are in stock at the moment, too; got mine on Thursday.

Good Job, I wish I had done 9's, but I got a screaming deal on my 8's.

I'll be trading my 225 RS3s for 205 NT01s for this weekends trackday on my above 8" 6ULs, if I have time to get to the tire shop. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Our search is working better recently than it has in the last month or so but I want to yell search noobs but our search sucks. I use google to search mt.net though searching "miataturbo.net: crap i'm searching for" yields the best results unfortunately :-/
