HPDE insurance
 
Do any of you guys insure your cars on the track?
I have started to look into it a bit. I hate to spend the money, but sub-$100 is a hell of a lot cheaper than a complete loss.

FYI I am a track :noob: who tends to have the "over drive it first and then work your way back down" mentality at autox.

I depends. Some states, if you have full coverage, your insurance is required to cover you during any driver's education event (so it pretty much can't be timed). Anyways, I know that's the case here in NC.

If its not one of those states, I think its probably a good idea at some point. Not sure when really.

yeah I just looked at http://hpdeins.locktonaffinity.com/Default.aspx and I see they have a 10% deductible with a min of $2k. I would pretty much need to total my car to make it worth it

I used Prosure when I was tracking my Evo. The cost was just based on the value you wanted to declare your car at. Ended up being 1700 for a year of coverage, 2K deductible, unlimited HPDE events, no timed events, 30K declared value. It doesn't look like Prosure is around anymore, at least I can't find anything on them. I don't bother with the Miata, since the whole purpose of getting it was because it's cheaper to track.

State Farm here in Arizona will not cover anything on track. There is something in the policy that states they will not cover anything happening on a "racing surface".

NC and TX are the only two states that I know of that you can submit
HPDE (NOT TT or w2w) accidents as valid claims.

I don't insure mine at all. I had it on a liability policy for a while but I just let that lapse. I got the car because I have no emotional attachment to this particular chassis and it is a track toy I have no problem with walking away from.

Same decision I came to. On the Miata I don't do HPDE insurance. Insurance is basically the same math as gambling - odds, your buy-in, reward.

I used to do the HPDE insurance on my (then) new Audi A4 Avant. But then a bent fender on it, let alone a big hit, is a lot of money. And something I can't fix myself.

Another thing I did after I did a couple years of events was do a rough calculation of "dollar value of damage I've seen divided by cars divided by track days" - indicated the insurance was probably a good deal for a higher dollar car.

As to street insurance, in CA it depends on the company. Some do exclude "racing surface." But a guy in a Audi TT (instructor) put his car into the Laguna Turn 4 exit inside wall. He was fine, car was a total. His street insurance company paid it off. I need to find out who that was.
