Roll bar will need padding for the street unfortunately. A bit too close to the noggin. But that's as far back as he could position the main hoop, clear the roof and seat. This as opposed to the existing aftermarket bars for the soft top that sit well inside of the outline of the seat and only really protect ah, very short drivers.
In this pic you can see one of the roof brackets. The top will have some stainless rivets or something on the outside. Not enough thickness to put riv-nuts into the roof and bolt on from the inside. He's adding brackets onto the roll bar to attach the roof to.
That's the way we used to do our NAS/NB builds. Super quick to get the top off that way.
We decided to place the window to retain trunk access. Looks better overlapping trunk, sitting on top of sail panels, but it would be far more difficult to seal. Not to mention losing easy trunk access. Here is a mockup of the window. Still looks bitchin tho.
Looks great and should be a substantial aero improvement and weight savings. I like that you kept the trunk functionality, personally, this is something you could do and keep street ability. Once done is like some more pics from the inside, just to see how hacky (or not) it looks. Not that this matters for the purpose of this car of course.
We're excited to see how it all comes together. We'll try to get a brief report from Alex about the difficulty of this project too. Seems like it was a lot of work, but maybe it's not as bad as it seems.
Bar is back out being powdercoated. Here it is fitted, You can see the roof mounts and OEM belt brackets integrated into the bar.
Alex is a clever dude and skilled fabricator, really clean solutions.
In today's age of SendCutSend and CageKits.com, I hope he's cataloging all these DXF files and considers selling a "weld it yourself" kit or something. This is really really cool stuff.
I made an account so I can follow this thread, it's great to see that there's finally someone doing a fixed roof/proper bar on the RF I too would be extremely interested in doing this to mine if you were to sell a kit or something of that nature. Excited to see the finished product!
I have asked Alex about offering the bar but not heard back yet. Keep in mind
- its non-reversible
- not an easy install
- requires drilling holes in roof
- deletion of most interior trim
- deletes rear glass
Its really a one-off. Not designed to be a kit. Would still require a skilled fabricator to complete an installation. I'll see what he says.
Alex replied. RF has no place to mount a roll bar. Had to weld in mounts for ours. Only option would be a weld in bar. So either way it involves welding. Either weld bar to tub or weld mounts to tub and bolt bar to those welded mounts.
I think Huevo will likely remain an anomaly as a fixed roof ND RF with full size roll bar. Shame it isn't easier to replicate.
It kinda sounds like if someone were able to install whatever pieces of a kit could be offered, they're probably capable of just doing the whole thing themselves and wouldn't need a kit.
Fastback is done. Alex had some issues with the 3D printed frame so he laser cut some aluminum sheet and bonded it in. Roll bar powder coated. We'll pick it up in the next few days. So anxious to drive with the cams, ported head and SPS tune.
Roll bar and window added 40 lbs. deleted 94 lbs worth of other bits. Net weight loss 54 lbs above CG
I'm wondering if the ABS computer spec'd for the Global Cup cars is PNP into our ND2. Would really like to get a better brake pedal in it.
