Jam Nut Science

For anyone that uses jam nuts for... well... anything. This is very good information:

The Use of Two Nuts to Prevent Self Loosening of Fasteners

I did not know that.

I just learned something new about my nuts.

Useful, but both of my nuts are thick. So, not AS useful as for someone with different sized nuts.

What happens to torque values if one nut is lower than the other?

jpreston 09-06-2013 10:52 PM

I heard hustler pays someone to jam his nuts.

Interesting.
But if you notice in the first video he did not tighten the nuts correctly. The method in the second video is what I understand to be correct. (using a backup wrench):2cents:

That was my first thought. Not disputing the science, but the video to me isn't accurate.

What about using a lock washer between them?

The article says tighten the small nut to ~25% of the final torque spec and then run the big nut into it at 100% of the final torque. There is math involved that makes my head hurt.
