Default Kickstarter: RaceCapture OBD/CAN Datalogger and lap timer

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...it/description

I have their Race Capture Pro 2. I love it. The custom scripting feature is awesome. You can read in CAN data from any ECU and make LED warnings or shift lights, etc. I have all my Megasquirt data logged with it along with some stand alone 0-5V sensors.

This new device is more PNP where you just hook up OBD to log data along with their GPS Lap Timing info. Megasquirt ECU data is possible too with some custom scripting. Plus you can make your own track maps and submit it too.

At $200 it seems like a steal if your in the market for a LapTimer + data logger combo.

I run one too and can vouch for its awesomeness. I run mine with a custom CAN script to log and display the sensor data from my Haltech on a Nexus 7. Live delta times are so good for dropping lap times.

I also have the Pro 2. Love it.

For anyone interested, you can just make out the delta time display via the RCP in this video:

It's not so easy to see from the cameras location due to the reflection of the sky, but from the driver's POV you can see the screen easily.

I also have the Autosports Lab's 3 stage shift light and I'm holding the Nexus 7 via a 3D printed mount.

I joined in. My Rev MS has the can module on it. Car 2.0 will probably get a dedicated older smartphone; this should replace both the Aim Solo and the Scangauge.

oops... noticed my video wasn't working.

Yeah there is custom script already written for the MegaSquirt. You just have to add it in and hook up the CAN signal.

This is any way to hard wire the display into the box? As it exists now it's not PT legal. Unless the layer of abstraction between the ECU and the display gets around the 'no telemetry data' rule.

You mean transmitting data from a data logger to a tablet or phone via Bluetooth is illegal telemetry?

for my RCP2 I use a usb cable and a USB On the go (OTG) adapter to hardware the two devices together due to the occasional Bluetooth glitch. So that's an option.

I came in here to ask about this. The way the rule is written makes it seem like any data logging of an ECU, regardless of method of connection, is illegal in PT/TT. Is that how everyone else reads it? Here's the rule:

Any hardware that allows a competitor or crew member to wirelessly or directly connect to the ECU (or alter ECU maps) at any time during competition or post-competition impound is strictly prohibited, regardless of whether such hardware is internal or external to the ECU, and regardless of the direction of data flow.

Its not very clear what devices that rule is trying to exclude. A laptop by that definition is ruled out. I'm pretty sure they are attempting to stop changable tunes... ie a high HP tune on a button press or something like that.

You could bypass that ruling entirely and still use the race capture but not connect it to the ecu at all. Just wire in all the required sensors etc in parallel. Bit of a hassle though but really all you need on the RCP is tps and rpm for good lap time comparison.

That wording is problematic. It could be interpreted as disallowing all MS3's such as mine, which has a usb port, which could be used at any time during competition to flash a new map. Whether anything is ever connected to the usb port is irrelevant, as the way the rule is written the usb port is hardware that allows the capability, and is therefore forbidden.

Can you actually purchase and receive a Racecapture Pro? I would love to get data out of my Megasquirt. I am currently using Harry's Laptimer, but I would have to buy a CAN device in order to get the Data out of the megasquirt in a format that Harry's will understand using a OBDII dongle.

You can buy the second gen Race Capture Pro from their store. It's an aluminium enclosure. The kickstarter one will be more compact and not requiring a fixed install.

As for Gopro control, you can buy a connector that plugs into port at the back of the camera. You could send it power and enable recording from the RCP...

if you have MS2 or MS3 you can stream the data to the RCP without any dongle or adapter. You just need to upload the appropriate script.

I just ordered one of the $199 units. In running a ms3 with can/obd2 port. It should work right? Or do I need one of the $259 units with obd to can adaptor?

I've always used ProClip mounts including my NB. Haven't bought anything yet for the NA but likely will still use them.

I used a Nexus 7 (7" not 8")
