LEXAN-Hardtop-thickness
Where did you get your lexan? It's an odd size in sheet stock, what thickness?

I got mine from MSC Direct, a friend had a work account on there, which gave discounted prices and free shipping on anything, so I got a 4x8 sheet of 3/32" to my door for like $68. You might be able to find it on mcmaster, or if you can find a plastics company local to you.
I think 3/32" is about the right thickness - any less and it will be a bit flimsy, any more and it'll be difficult to bend it to contour to the window opening without using heat, at least with the fiberglass top that I had. Here's a pic from right after I finished building the racecar last year, before it underwent a season of trying to avoid panel-crushing out-of-class spec miatas... so clean at this point!! |
The first place I would start is the rulebook of your favorite sanctioning body.
I know most deal with replacing the windshield and/or side windows, but it would be a good idea to see if the rear window is covered. |
I think I used 3/32" also. I just googled "lexington ky plastic supply" and found a place in town that had it in stock. They even cut it to size so that I wasn't paying for more than I needed. I'm not sure how many other locations they have, but General Rubber and Plastics is the name of the place.

I used 1/4". It is over kill, but easy to use still. 3/32" sounds like a winner.

I used 1/8"

Good info, thanks for the posts. Mcmaster has been killing me with shipping, will have to investigate other sources

I pick up from a place called Piedmont Plastics on the north side of Charlotte, NC. They supply quite a few of the NASCAR teams.

We use .187" front and .125" rear. Hard coated polycarbonate that can be washed like normal glass
Miata Windshield |
Can you make two rear windows from one 4x8 sheet? I have a friend that's willing to split to cost with me if we can both use it.
|
1/8" on the rear works fine. It moves around a bit at high speed but it's not an issue. Doesn't need to withstand any impacts.
|
Is it possible to glue the front lexan windshield in place like a factory glass windshield. I sure would hate to drill holes in my windshield frame.

Getting a 60" wide sheet is the trick ;)
