Lexan windshield?
 

Has anyone done this and recorded the weight savings? My googling turns up mostly lotus and circle track car results, both of which have windshields not very similar in size to a miata. Seeing as how my current windshield has both a large crack and impregnated weld splatter :facepalm:its going to need to be replaced. From what Ive read on lotus forums the protective tear away films that are available will last around 1 year on average and will stand up to wiper use as long as the surface is wet, which was my greatest concern. Any info would be great, Im a little surprised theres not some already out there for the miata crowd, this seems like a fairly inexpensive mod for the weight that can be saved.

I've done my hardtop window, I would never do the windshield. The material costs the same as a glass installation, and lasts 1 year vs. 10-20.

The "98+" shield fits 90-05.

11 lbs isnt bad but I thought it would be a bigger difference than that.

It's a weight savings of ~55% over stock. It's a pretty big difference.

Percentage wise it is a pretty huge difference, the glass windshield is just lighter than I would have thought. I was assuming it would be closer to 30lbs, i think I just forgot how little it is. Hopefully I can get the material for wholesale pricing thru my work. If I was smart Id make a dxf file and cut out a few of them.

Uncoated Lexan will last less than a year before it's so pitted and scratched you can't see through it. RacingShields coats the windshield inside and outside with a hard-coating that prevents scratches/chips. You can make it yourself, but IMO the coating is worth paying for.

Thanks for the link. If I ever bust my windshield in my track car I will seriously consider one of those.
