Lost bakes at Barber yesterday - questions
I have a 2007 NC. My SS braided brake hose developed a crack at the fitting near the caliper and I lost fluid and front brakes in turn 5 at Barber. The rears slowed me down enough to stay out of the gravel pit. I assume I now have air in the ABS system. Is that a good assumption? If so, do I need to have special tools get out air? I have a Motive Power Bleeder.
I have always bled my system like any other non-ABS system, being careful to keep plenty of fluid in the master cylinder. Never had any problems. I've read threads on bleeding ABS, but none are specific to the NC system. Thanks. |
Need to burp the ABS pump. Dealer plugs an SST in to cycle the pump. Some cars will briefly power the pump when the car is powered up. NA/NB don't. Not sure about NC. Some techs will "jump" the ABS pump to cycle it. I don't know how to do that.
We generally just drive the car down the street with some junk tires on and purposely stab the brakes to engage ABS. Do this a few times and you'll feel the pedal come up a bit. This will push any air out of the pump and out to the calipers where it can be bled. So full bleed, drive car to cycle pump and re-bleed. Ghetto technique but works every time. |
I appreciate it Emilio.

Most diagnostic tools have ABS bleeding procedures. Im referring to the $2-20k ones. I use AutoLogic and a Snap-On modus myself. Or what E said. Only problem is if you don’t trigger all the channels, they won’t activate.

Thanks Curly. I've decided to take it to my mechanic. Brakes are pretty important . . .

What brand of SS lines? Any insight on age?
That must have been a terrifying failure. Glad you are alright. |

That must have been a terrifying failure. Glad you are alright. I was fortunate that I'd wasn't up on someone's bumper when it happened. All in all, a good result from a bad situation. |

SST or wiring hack is more precise method but not everyone here has those kinds of service tools. |
Crack most likely was from over tightening the lines. Flares tend to do that. Unfortunately it’s not something you can use a torque wrench on.

NB ABS has a dance you can do to cycle it (jump a couple wires in the diag connector, hold down brake pedal while turning ignition on or something like that). It's likely the NC does too because as far as I can tell all ABS is made by Bosch, no matter what brand of car it's in. Check the FSM?

The good news, is that I figured out how to engage the ABS pump in a diagnostic procedure while sitting on the jackstands. If you look in the shop manual PDF that's linked in the sticky links section as a "1999-2001 shop manual" (it's actually a 99-00, not 2001), it calls out a few things.
So the first thing is that the diag procedure won't run if there are codes in the ABS computer. To clear them, you ground the TBS wire and turn the car on without hitting the brake pedal. Let it flash the codes at you on the ABS light, then tap the brake pedal 10 times at a rate of more than once a second. When they clear it will turn the brake light on, and you'll hear the relays in the ABS unit click. Turn it off, then turn it back on, and it shouldn't flash the ABS light at all. This is on page 04-01-4 in the shop manual above. After that, the diag procedure will run. You keep the TBS wire grounded and key it on with your foot on the brake pedal, and it will engage the pump and cycle the solenoids for each of the three channels in turn. It's not subtle, it's really really obvious when it happens. This is on page 04-13-1. |
FSM FTW.
We we have them for pretty much every year, did not know it was in there. Thanks! |
