Default Anyone racing turbo miata's with NASA - PT or ST??

as my username says I am turboing my Showroom spec miata race car to go faster with the ultimate aim of racing in NASA

I am initially focussed on PT - where class is based on power to weight and then points for mods.

is anyone else racing in NASA PT?
should I throw the baby out with the bath water, go for +300hp and go for ST??
any major advice??
what mods are worth it and what are not
is there an optimal miata power to fit into a certain initial base class??

Cheers
Steve

Probably depends on what class is the most populated in your region. You can set a turbo car up to run anything from PTC all the way up to ST1/SU - just depends on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go.

lol @ Greenbaum. Apparently some turbo Miata did well 2-years ago at Nationals in PTA so Greg will not base-class any FI Miata in "A". I was told I had to run less than 210whp to run TTB or 211whp and run TTS.

Good luck dealing with this guy. From the forum it's clear he arbitrarily enforces some rules based upon who he does and doesn't like. He argues with people and deletes their posts. If you disagree on the internet he threatens to revoke your NASA membership.

Josh (Coraldoc) races PTD with a rotrex Miata. I dont know of any turbo Miata, probably is one somewhere.

since PT class is based on HP to weight ratio. you don't want a peaky engine, ideal engine would be a turbo with electronic that lowers boost as rpm climbs. say making 200wph at 3,000rpm to 7,000rpm. which means toque peaks at 3k, and declines as rpm increase.

I've dreamt of building this idea engine (Savington would be one building it). this will dominate PT classing.

just rough numbers (don't quote me on this). you will be PTD with ~150whp at 2,300LB comp weight. PTC with ~175whp at same weight.

I think at this point, I would try and do a low boost setup for ttc. Maybe 170whp, under 2300lb competition weight. Or whatever class has the best competition in your region. Best parts would be tires and well setup suspension of course. Also all the free mods possible.

There was a turbo miata guy in PTA this year at the NASA Nationals. Talked to him very briefly because he wasn't around most of the week, he was busy getting a new engine put in his car. He missed all of the qualifying races but started the championship race. I don't remember where he finished but the PTA, PTB, ST1,2, SU race had crazy mixed conditions with lots of crashing. I'm thinking he took it very easy in the race, I know he didn't finish on the podium.

Unfortunately I was too busy working on my car to ever get a chance to check his car out.

At the track days yes you can blow them away, and that is quite enjoyable. At a NASA event, the GT3s in TTS I am racing against are fast and not so easy to beat.

The drivers are fast? The cars are fast? or both?

Both. TTS is a bit of a catch-all for people who've crossed the line in A and B, which is a ton of fast cars. It's a bunch of C6's with aero, Porsche racecars, and other fancy stuff. This dude shows up in a Miata, lol.

Yep, both. Entering a Miata in TTS is like bringing a knife to a gunfight, even with the LS1. I am going to have to work hard to win a TTS race next year. Not impossible, but not easy.

Then after that they will find a way to make LSx swap Miatas illegal for TTS, because you cannot have a Miata beating up on Corvettes and Porsches

ehh, depends on who shows up. sometimes the fastest tta beats the fastest tts. sometimes the ttb m3 beats the tta vettes. all of them. i've beat half the tta and tts cars before in my ttb car. (i run tta cuz i may be on or a couple lbs. below my claimed weight)

we'll see whats up @ nola. it'll be new to everyone, plus there will be cars and drivers from many states.

you're describing tt-u (unlimited). c6 vettes must stay nearly stock to stay in tts. porsche racers, radicals and such are in ttr or ttu.

is this different from region to region? there is a few corvettes around here which are no where near stock and they run in TTS. Loud, fat tires, front and rear aero.

When Sean shows up with his 350Z and runs 1:52s at TWS (new TTS record) like he did in August, then that is tough to beat. The GT3s were not there.

In April at TWS, both GT3s were there and running in the 1:53 range. Sean was in the low 1:54 range. That is the weekend when I turned the 1:57.5 on medium compound Z214s. So I would have had to drop 4 seconds off of my best lap. Would 275 A6 Hoosiers be enough? Not sure.

TTB M3 is slow...

Coming from the guy who finished just behind him at Nationals...in the PT race that is. *cry* We both got our asses handed to us by a Grand AM miata (which was the slowest of the three cars...in the dry at least). That same miata also beat most of the PTA corvettes.

you know mark perry's ls miata ran 1:52.xx at tws last month right? no reason you couldn't with the same tires. his car is just more pretty.

track: the rules are the same. i know what cars he's talkin' about and they weren't tts cars. i don't remember seeing any tts class vettes with wings in our region. i guess i should have been more specific, and i don't have a vette so i haven't researched this a ton, but i believe a base model c6 would have enough points to do aero and nt-01's, but maybe not slicks, and certainly not with a bunch of suspension and egine upgrades. a c6 "z06" is very limited in mods. tires and a filter, or street tires and a few engine upgrades. a c5 or c5z would probably be the fastest in tts if built to the class limit.

Yeah he texted me, then called me right after they did it
They did that on 275 R6s. That is indeed very encouraging.

His video of them chasing down that Ferrari is great, except the part where a car, that the Ferrari was overtaking, spun off the track in T1-T2. Hard to tell if the Ferrari was responsible. Mark said after that session they had a lot of people come over to their pit to check out the car. Then the Ferrari driver came over and said something to the effect of he had new tires now and was ready for a rematch.

Gonna run several track days in the Miata this going year then hope to get into TTB. May be a challenge to be competitive without a full standalone and more boost control. Maybe a smaller turbo and let it fall off up top?
