Default NB midpipe options.

My stock gutted-cat midpipe has horrible resonance at 3k rpm, resulting in a very unpleasant drone, and frequent backfire pops on decel. Which, actually, is not that unpleasant, but now that the cat is gutted (which I regret, was done chasing a problem) I can't run my Enthuza muffler on the street without Serious. Rice. Factor. I mean, surrus! Huge neighborhood-echoing volume at anything over 10% throttle. Cat-scaring decel pops galore.

What I want:
a resonated NB midpipe without a cat (so I can run 110 race fuel if I want)

What I've found:
  • Roadstersport mdpipe with cat. Overall this would be fine I think, except for the cat part. Gutting it would put me where I am now. The thin walls of the catalytic really want to resonate and rejoice in their freedom when the interior matrix of the cat is removed.
  • Racing Beat NB Race Pipe. This has no resonator. I think it would be fine, except that it conflicts with my stock butterfly brace, and I'm somewhat concerned about Portland International Raceway sound check without a resonator in my midpipe.

Personally, a loud exhaust will not bother me in the car, if it's consistent, you know what I'm saying? Right now, with my Enthuza muffler, (which is not the problem) the car has a great idle sound, and great street sound if you stay out of the throttle. The minute you get into it, even 25%, sound levels change drastically in ricer fashion, and there's that horrible drone at 3k rpm. The stock muffler has enough damping factor to it to cancel out most everything. But the Enthuza muffler reveals the flaws of my current midpipe like good speakers reveal the flaws of a crappy head unit.

So is there an option I haven't found? Or do I need to ask Enthuza to build the midpipe I want for me if I don't want the Racing Beat option.

Edit: the problem with the Racing Beat midpipe is that I'm concerned I will blow sound check at Portland International Raceway on "quiet Mondays." I am double-checking what that limit is exactly. My car is by-the-ear not at all quiet currently when I've listened to it on the few occasions I've trusted it to others.

Thanks bros.

Enthuza will make you a mid-pipe without a cat but with a resonator if you want. I had some gripes with his work, but its held up for 3+ years now, so I can't complain.

Any local shop can do that for you also...

As advertising is fond of saying, "image is not representative of product."

Go to 949 and try to buy a resonated 99-05 midpipe. I DOUBLE DOG dare you.

why not just weld in a resonator onto your current gutted stocker?
go nuts and get the biggest one with the most packing that you can fit under a miata.

heck, go ever further and run 2, like I did on my 99 lol

Yeah that's a good idea. Just have them cut out the existing cat and put in a resonator of the same length. I will look into that.

So many new shinies in my life I went straight to new shinies for this problem when I probably don't need to.

I bought one from 949 right before Miatas @ MRLS this year. It's definitely got a giant resonator in it.

With a resonator? There's no such option on the site. Only the straight-thru test pipe. Yes, take a pic please.

Edit. Goddamit

GODDAMMIT

This is what the day after the sleepover birthday party of your now-11yo does to you. Mental mush ... inability to form sentences more complex than "need beer" ... reading comprehension failure.

This thread is starting to deliver

But seriously, do what Vlad said and replace your gutted cat with a big *** resonator. If what you have now is working a resonator will only make it better?

This would be my annual WTF how did I fail here moment.

Edit: and the leaded race fuel is a no go anyway, because it would kill my O2 sensors, which I forgot about. The stock ones don't matter much at this point, but the LC-1 needs to live.

We really need to just post instead of constantly editing previous posts.

Six 10 to 11 year old boys that were not mine. No property damage, only a little blood. They probably got 3 hours of sleep. I maybe got 4. And the thing is, with other peoples' kids, you have to be nice to them. You can't treat them like you do your kids. So taxing!

Is a joke, of course ... I treated them just as poorly as I do my own.

KIDDING!

It was fun but draining. Not my sharpest today.

This is one reason why turbos are better than superchargers.

I have the RB midpipe and will vouch that it looks exactly like E02K's pic and has a resonator. I'm running it with stock header and stock NB rear section on my daily driver. It's only barely louder than stock but adds a little rasp. It's exactly what I wanted for a daily driver.

Yes, thanks, I need no further convincing. I took a quick online course from the Derek Zoolander Center For Children Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too, and I am pleased to report it has made my reading comprehension 100% gooder.

For example, when I read the description of the 99-05 Racing Beat Race Pipe on the 949 website, I now comprehend the words "This resonated connecting pipe incorporates a pre-silencer that has been tuned ...". It means it has a resonator! I read good now.

I can hook you up with an awesome mid pipe. No resonator in it, but comes with this AMAZING new device called a TURBO that makes the exhaust quiet.
