NB: NRG Hub & Clock Spring Fitment
 

So I got a NRG slim hub & quick release. Still looking to find a 350mm wheel but I borrowed one from a friend for now. Last night I removed the OEM wheel down to the clock spring and I can figure out how to disconnect the airbag wiring clip; is it even possible? I read on another thread you have to trim one piece but I'm looking to remove the yellow clip that connects to the airbag.

Yup. I cut mine off with dykes. Well more like I crushed it and broke it off.

Bah, that sucks. I can always get a used clock spring if the stock wheel ever needs to go back on. Thanks all. Did you guys also do the three 10-ohm resistors in parallel to create 3.3 ohms to fool the airbag light?

No mines currently blinking, but I'm going to be pulling the dash at some point when I get time in order to remove the entire air bag system and remove the light.

i just twisted both airbag wires together and voila no airbag light

Thanks all, I got the connectors clipped to fit the hub on but ran into my next issue. When I bolt in the NRG slim hub the outer edge pushes against the plastic piece surrounding the clockspring making the wheel really hard to turn. It seems like the inner part of the NRG hub isn't long enough to mimic the stock wheel (the part that pushes on the white nylon piece). I thought about making spacers for that out of washers but thought I'd ask first.

I just trimmed the plastic with a box cutter. Do it carefully and you wont ever know that you cut it. Well besides the fact that plastic seems the breed like rabbit. I swear I've cleaned it all out like 4 times and I keep finding more pieces I cut off. As a benefit, you can make the plastics fit together better than they did with the stock wheel.

Are we talking about the same plastic piece here? I'm referring to the outer ring of the clock spring that doesn't move. Picture stolen from a thread on CR.net of a NB Miata.

That looks the same as the NA one and mine doesnt interfere there. It does interfere on the plastic steering column covers though, but it doesnt look like the NB have that issue.

So I fiddled more with the wheel tonight. I removed the clockspring altogether and was able to install the NRG hub and it fits perfectly but I lose horn functionality this way. I don't see how I can get the hub bolted down properly with the clockspring in place to keep horn functionality.

I believe you also loose the turn signal auto-stop.

Nah, the clockspring only provides connectivity for the airbag and horn; the signal auto-return is done by the white nylon connector thing in the middle with two barbs protruding from it. Though I am having issues centering the wheel with it. More on that later.

I found it best to just loosely put the big nut on and drive the car enough to find straight again, then park it straight take the nut off with finger strength, then center the wheel correctly.

Ah, that's not quite what I meant. :D So the signal-lever device has 2 prongs that are at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions when the wheel is straight. The NRG hub has two places for the signal-lever device to fit in to but they're at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions when the NRG hub is aligned. If I align the NRG hub to fit onto the signal-lever device then the wheel is not centered. If the wheel is centered then the signal-lever device is off.

Strange my signal lever thing is straight up and down. You know you could just put the NRG hub 90* off. The letters NRG dont have to be at the top, it just looks better that way.

I had the logo pointing down and tried different angles since I really don't mind where the logo points. I'll check again this evening; it was kinda late yesterday. :P Thanks!
