Lies.
CBR1000RR = R1, both can weigh down roughly the same amount of papers as far as I'm concerned.

No paddle shifters?

Probably not. Paddles require a separate pneumatic pump, lines and control system. The paddles available also move with the wheel, not big paddles that stay on the column like a WRC car. Paddles are cool but I'll stick with something simple to set up and use.

Develop short-ratio steering rack, never cross arms on-track again, paddle shift to the win...

emilio700 Feb 16, 2016 12:15 AM

I am contemplating an electric pump somewhere in the middle of the car for power steering. It's going to be tough to muscle 275s on 11s with all that aero otherwise.
Paddle shifting is just another layer of cost and complexity I am ok avoiding.

Have a look at electric power steering columns from small Toyotas (IIRC Yaris).

Saturn Vue steering column with this Saturn Vue ion Chevrolet Equinox ? Electric Power Steering Controller Box ? Epas | eBay

I'm doing this on the XP car after I get the LNF in and working.

It'll be interesting see if that actually materializes, or materializes with sufficient quality.

Pretty sure I'll keep the Miata rack to keep that part simple. Just add a new pump since the standard Miata pump tends to blow up when it gets hot. It'll also be nice to get the weight of the pump off the nose.

ThePass Feb 16, 2016 02:07 PM

Interested in which E-pump you choose. I'm going powered steering as well.

Blackbird Feb 16, 2016 04:54 PM

The Toyota E power steering unit is on the column, under the dashboard.
To be used with the Miata steering rack.

Its not so bad 275's on 11 without power steering. Even my scrawny co-driver got use to it last year. Having said that I think we will keep the power on his CSP car build and I'm having to talk him into keeping it.

I did it one season and said fuck that. Every tiny crack in the road along the direction of travel made the steering wheel try to remove my fingers.

I'm another in the use the electric column option if you can legally modify the steering column inside the driver compartment. The GM columns are cheap and there's already and aftermarket controller for them. If you have to go hydro, the Volvo pump might be a better option than the toyota because the volvo doesnt require special fluid and is literally 1/5th the cost while being substantially more available.

How much does the Volvo unit weigh?

I didnt weigh it, according to how much Eric claims he added in weight with the mr2 pump its a couple pounds heavier than the MR2 pump. Maybe someday I'll weigh it, it felt around the same weight as the stock ps pump.

Nice! Look forward to seeing some vids in action.

Interesting case ribbing. I assume that design helps counter case twist.

julio Mar 23, 2016 03:51 AM

I think the ribbing is just there for pleasure......

Did you get the straight cut or helical gears? Maybe I missed that but I saw the gear ratio you picked but not the gear type.

I'm sure that the 375bhp rating is probably conservative but wish is was a little higher for what it costs. Would be nice to be able to run this on a higher HP turbo build with out having to be nervous about having 10K wrapped up in your trans.
