OS Giken vs KAAZ LSD???
 

I tried to purchase a OS Giken limited slip from Flying Miata but they do not have any in stock and the manufacturer stated that they are all on a ship and will not be to the states in a while. Do any vendors on here have them in stock?

I also found this different brand of limited slip (KAAZ). Has anyone heard of them and are they any good as it is significantly cheaper. Thanks

I've had my Kaaz 1.5 way diff for about 3 years now (maybe longer, I don't remember) and I have been perfectly happy with it. I upgraded from an open diff, so the difference was night and day. Lockup under power is smooth and consistent, pre-load was a little tight at first, but loosened up after the first 200 miles or so. I've always run the prescribed Kaaz gear oil in it, expensive maybe, but it's worth it to me.

It was a little clunky before break-in, but that was normal. Now it's only a little clunky after the car sat for a while and I do tight turns. That goes away after 2 turns though.

I did get it significantly cheaper than the link in the first post. I think I got it from Kaaz directly and came to ~$800ish including shipping. They even offered to adjust preload before shipping without extra charge.

I've never driven an OSG equipped car, so can't tell the difference but I would buy the Kaaz again in a hearbeat.

I don't remember there being a high tune OSG available when I bought mine from you a couple years back - what's the difference and will i need to upgrade when I start putting 350 to the wheels?

I know how a Kaaz feels. It feels like DONUTS.

As in it makes the car loose? My 99' came with one and I'm wondering if it's really worth all the money to switch to a Giken or if I can make it work by dialing it in a bit with different fluid/preload etc...

We had fresh vegan donuts at the party last night. Basically, instead of milk we used soymilk and instead of eggs, we used egg replacer. Really though, you don't need eggs at all. Just a little baking soda is fine.

Dipped them in agave nectar. Amazing.

I won't have the budget to swap out the KAAZ to a Giken for a while so I'm wondering if there's anything I can do with it to make it a bit better. I have no experience tuning diffs but I can tell this thing locks up HARD which I'm guessing is why the car is loose on corner exits?

if you're getting wheelspin at corner exit, probably. but it's more than likely that you're just using more power than the tires can handle in any case.

If you want to pull it and rebuild it, you can easily swap the plates around to reduce the lockup.

I run mine at max locking and while it's quiet and civil, it's also pretty brutal on corners.

Mine came with the car and it's super clunky which is why I just ordered some KAAZ fluid but I'm wondering if it's worth it to pull the dam thing while I'm swapping out the fluid to try and dial it in a bit.

I've also noticed that when I lift off the throttle it seems to make the car want to rotate quite a bit which is fine most of the time since I know it's coming but every so often it catches me out.

On the other hand, I have 2 PAX wins in a row right now so it's not all that bad but it feels like a good time to try and make it better.


I look at how badly everybody slams on the KAAZ plus how much faster the Giken was in GRM's test and can't help but wonder if I can do something to improve this thing.

Did you adjust it yourself afterwards? Did you use kaaz parts or sodacans/other homebrew stuffs?

FWIW Carroll Smith (one of the most famous race engineers) is a big fan of Torsens.

Their main disadvantage is that they eat up relatively large amount of power (and therefore also create a lot of heat). But they do a good job of transferring power where it is needed.

If you have enough grip to ensure that there's never any wheelspin, sure. As soon as you get even the slightest bit of wheelspin, the Torsen basically ceases to exist and you lose 100% of your power.
