I forgot that he did it. There's a guy in TX who also stripped his car, and posted photos here. I can't remember his name right now. I don't think it's miata_racer. If I remember right he theorized that a Prod/Prepared car can get down to 14xx precage, and had some numbers to back that up. Unless my scales are way off I can completely see it. There's still a ton of weight that can be pulled out. Heavy fenders, fuel tank, control arms, brakes, clutch, transmission, undercoating and intake manifold are all on my list to address.

1990 w/ ITB FE3, 6 speed, FC rearend, cage and me (195lbs)

Back on the scales next week after the recent reductions/additions should be close to the same weight just different distribution that will need to be addressed.

I know after AMS acid dipping there Evo X, it lost 38 lbs. Its just not the coating, but it removes a microscopic amount of steel form the hole body. I did the math on if the body was made of Carbon.

Factory NA Shell...................466 lbs
Carbon NA Shell...................Approx 82 lbs

why is my car so front heavy? autocross setup no roll bar etc. Engine is mounted 1.5" aft of stock location as well.

What radiator, front brakes, and what have you done for weight reduction? That's basically stock weight isn't it?

That is with 250 lb driver so 2085 very light on fuel. heavy godspeed radiator and Vibrant intercooler Id guess those two items are at least 25lbs heavier than stock. turbo system is not really that light eather. long runner manifold is like 18lbs. no top, 14 lb seats. brakes are 11.75" rotors with dynapro calipers (mini kit) and 11.44" rears. still lighter than stock.

180 lb driver
+/- full tank of gas
~2300lbs without driver
52/48 split

I've since removed around 100 lbs of plastic bumpers and misc. sound deadening.

No fancy digital scale photo. Not bad for having a full interior still.

Madness is a very good name for that car. I hope to take a ride in it some day. Sub 2k with that setup has to be a joy.

Didn't realize that was with driver. What is your seat position like? We extended our controls (5'10" and 5'6" drivers) and were able to move our driving position back about 5". Not sure if that's legal for you. Definitely lighter seats are available. One piece or two piece rotors? I just purchased 11.75 rotors and there is a range from about 9lbs to 15lbs per side. Also, looks like you have some room to corner jack that thing a little bit for better balance.

also has plywood splitter that sticks 6" forward of the bumper. Stock headlights. Driver is getting moved back yet like 2". its a bit heavier on the front for an autocross car because I plan on retaining a cooling module combo that works when I take this beast to the track to run NASSA TT. It works as it is now for 20-30 minute track sessions with the boost turned up making well over 300 hp and owning several track records. maybe I can find one that works good that is lighter but I sort of doubt what some of the other competitive dedicated SSM cars are running would work. In TT form it has a lot more weight added to the back however, roll bar, rear swaybar, hard top, accusump, mounted to an additional rear subframe brace, ends up being like 180 lbs added all aft of the centerline. minimum competition weight for Autocross is 2080 without driver and for TT2 formula and my power I need ~2500 with driver.

298whp of madness :-)

No passengers seat. That's where the fuel tank lives.

guttedmiata 01-13-2015 01:07 PM

I'm lighter with more power and currently have a passenger seat. :)

WI think 180A of weight in drivers seat for corner weighting and 1/2 tank.

No driver.

interesting how weight distributions on miatas seems to vary between 51% and 55% to the front. seems like quite a swing.

guttedmiata 01-15-2015 08:14 PM

Depends on where you've removed and added weight. Can't imagine any other reason.

bbundy 01-16-2015 03:08 AM

track cars with a cage roll bar and more safety gear more fuel and less interior seem to be more balanced I guess. when I take all the track stuff out of my track car to convert to an autocross car it becomes nose heavy. Its faster around an autocross course even though it is nose heavy without all the track stuff though.

The corner weights are all static. I wonder where the weights fall most of the time during actual driving. Given the amount of time on the go pedal vs the brake I bet the balance is a lot better than what the scales say.

Semi gutted 91 with roll bar and hard top (naturally aspirated setup at the moment). 170 lb driver. Shooting to get the chassis under 2000lbs. That will be a stretch tho since I want to add more chassis stiffening mods.
