Default Ultrashield 16" Rally Sport

I'll start it off with a common one.

Model: Rally Sport
Brand: Ultrashield
Size of seat: 16"
Side or bottom mount: Either
Adjustable or fixed rails: Fixed
Rail model: Custom
Driver height & weight: 6' 210
INSEAM (I have super short legs so need to be mounted low): 32
Fit in car: Some trans bashing, but fits decently well. 17" might be hard 15" might be easier
Driver fit : Fits well. Not to tight, not too loose. 15" would have been too tight for long drives.
Link to seat or source: https://www.ultrashieldrace.com/cata...Sport-Seat/160
Link to rail or source:
Certifications:
Construction: Aluminum
Weight: ~15lbs (15" is 14.9, 17" is 15.8, from here)

Additional notes.

Easy to mount because you just drill your own holes
DO NOT run one of these on the track (or street) without a back brace.

Default Sparco Rev

Model: Rev
Brand: Sparco
Size of seat:
Side or bottom mount: Side Mount
Adjustable or fixed rails: Adjustable
Rail model: PCI Mounts
Driver height & weight: 5'7" & 155
Fit in car: Fits great, only bashing needed was to fit the PCI mount
Driver fit : It's a snug seat, I have a 32" waist, and if I get any larger I won't fit.
Link to seat or source: Sparco USA Bought from OGRacing
Link to rail or source: Adjustable Seat Mounts ? PCI Racing
Certifications: FIA
Construction: One piece fiberglass
Weight: 14.6 lbs (shell only)

Additional Notes:
-For my height, the PCI Mounts do not work well. Even though I'm 5'7", I can barely pass a broomstick test, I will probably be switching to some of OG Racing's super low mounts this coming year. Also, I could not use the sub belt mounting on the brackets due to it being too close to the seat, so I ended up hacking that section of the mount off and putting the eye bolts in the floor.
-The Sparco Rev has a super small sub belt opening, it basically turns my 6 point into a 5 point. Also, your back will probably need reconstructive surgery if you take one of these on a long drive without adding some padding of some sort.

Default Cobra Evolution

Model: Evolution Pro
Brand: Cobra
Size of seat: Standard
Side or bottom mount: FIA side mount
Adjustable or fixed: Fixed
Rail model:
Driver height & weight: 5-7"/145# to 6-1" 190 lb
Fit in car : Perfect
Driver fit : Perfect
Link to seat or source: www.subesports.com
Link to rail or source:
Certifications: FIA 8855-1999
Construction: FRP & Kevlar
Weight: 20#
Notes : Hammered trans tunnel and removed e-brake. Removed OEM rear seat mount bosses. Mounts are custom made steel brackets. Cage by TC Design built around the seat

We chose the Evolution Pro because it fit the wide range of drivers sizes that will be piloting Crusher. The see through wings greatly improve side visibility over seats with solid wings. It's overall shape allows us to mount it so that very little of the door opening is blocked. Our biggest driver can get still out with the door closed and his HNRS device( HANS) on. Ashley and Chad at Subesports were really helpful in helping us select the right seat and they have a showroom to try them out first.

Model: EVO 2
Brand: Sparco
Size of seat: N/A
Side or bottom mount: Side, custom made by myself.
Adjustable or fixed rails: Fixed to floor
Rail model: N/A
Driver height & weight: 5'-10" 155 lbs
Fit in car: Great when finished.
Driver fit : Purrrrrfect
Link to seat or source: OG Racing, great help, handled my neurotic tenancis very well.
Link to rail or source: N/A
Certifications: FIA
Construction: Fiberglass
Weight: Not sure..

So I had an existing cage, which made this installment a bit more difficult. My cage fits within 1/4" of the hard top (I thought that was really good) and it was impossible to pass the broomstick test with a helmet. To fix this I had to cut out the floor, make an angled pan that got me 1.75 inchs lower. To get myself center on the steering wheel (I'm picky about how I sit too) I had to cut about 2" out of the trans tunnel to get te seat over far enough. In the end, I sat square to the wheel, passed the test and was really happy.

The hole in the floor.

Starting the side mounts. Overkill aluminum.

The replacement seat pan..

Reinforcing the pan and some spacers to adjust height/ angle. The ones pictured are permanently welded, the adjustable ones just sit on top.

Done.

wait, ^^^^ that pic was during fitment. Need to find a pic of actual finished install.

Default Momo Daytona / Safari

These seats are discontinued I think. I installed these about 9 years ago, never liked them and were sold not too long after.

Model: Daytona / Safari (same seat)
Brand: Momo
Certifications:FIA 8855-1999 & Hans approved
Construction: FRP
Size of seat: Standard
Side or bottom mount: side
Adjustable or fixed: fixed
Rail model: custom, rear bosses on tub cut off
Driver height & weight: 6-3", 180lbs
Fit in car : OK, seat is tall
Driver fit : Feels like 15-16" ultrashield.
Link to seat or source: discontinued
Link to rail or source: LPI Racing
Notes : 20.4lbs. Seat is very upright. To lower helmet required tilting seat back about 20°. That raised thighs, coupled with tall thigh bolsters made steering column-leg clearance too tight. Wings are really big. Even mounted as far back as would fit in tub, they make it difficult for this driver to get out of a closed door with HNRS/helmet. Seat came back out and was sold to shorter, thinner driver. Can't really recommend them for a Miata regardless of driver size. Might be OK in a sedan where the upright seating position can be more comfortable.

Default Spec Miata

Model: Spec Miata
Brand: Ultrashield
Size of seat: 16", 20 degree layback
Side or bottom mount: Either, you drill you own holes.
Adjustable or fixed rails: Adjustable
Rail model: Stock 1990 Miata rails
Driver height & weight: Driver 1- 6' 200lbs Driver 2- 5' 10" ~200lbs
Fit in car: Excellent, no modifications needed to tunnel for 16" and Im pretty sure 17" would clear as well. Shoulder area clears all cages and bars since this seat has no shoulder features or halo.
Driver fit : Very good, it holds well without obstructing arms or elbows, although doesn't offer the holding power and safety of shoulders and halos. It makes a good dual duty seat if your car is street legal.
Link to seat or source: Ultrashield Spec Miata Seat
Certifications: unknown if any, could not find that info.
Construction: 0.125" 5052 Aluminum, 5 or 6 pnt,
Weight: unknown

Like Aidan's it will need a back brace. Since my car is a dual driver we had to make it adjustable and use an adjustable sub belt. With the way its setup we can have the seat moved and pinned and the sub belt adjusted for a driver change in about 1 minute. It is surprisingly comfortable for an aluminum seat, but not for long periods of time. Any more than a few hours would become quite uncomfortable, probably not ideal for endurance racing.

Model: Evolution Technology Carbon
Brand: Cobra
Size of seat: Standard width
Side or bottom mount: Side
Adjustable or fixed rails: Fixed
Rail model: Blackbird Fabworx custom welded base
Driver height & weight: 5'8", 175ish with mid-week beers held back, 180ish with fat kid let loose
Fit in car: Big cut in the tunnel and rear humps removed to allow it to be low enough and centered
Driver fit : Perfect!
Link to seat or source: HMS Motorsport
Link to rail or source: ---
Certifications: FIA
Construction: Carbon Fiber shell, memory foam padding with heat management properties, Carbon textile hi-wear patches (optional), Custom 3 color design with the Blackbird Fabworx logo embroydered and Orange stitching (smile inducing feature).
Weight: Not much lighter than the Kevlar version, but tested and withstood much higher G loads

Installation notes from Morpheus -

Cut tunnel and seat base -

The seat has been repositioned to less than 0.5" from the seat bulkhead for improved weight dist, pedals extended back and steering wheel uses a big spacer to bring it close to the driver's reach, long shifter bent to 7:30 so 5th gear shifts are a possibility
Seat location and steering wheel spacer visible -

You can see how far back I'm sitting, the steering wheel is roughly at the mid point of the length of the door -

Model: Circuit 2
Brand: Sparco
Size of seat: n/a
Side or bottom mount: Side
Adjustable or fixed rails: Fixed
Rail model: Garagestar
Driver height & weight: 5'6" 200ish
Fit in car: Lots of bashing the trans tunnel, bottom of seat hits the stock rear mounting humps, so mounting it any further back isn't an option (unless I cut the rear humps out). Luckily I'm short enough that the pedals aren't too close.
Driver fit : Perfect

Default Sparco Ergo

Model: Ergo
Brand: Sparco
Size of seat: Medium
Side or bottom mount: Side Mount
Adjustable or fixed rails: Fixed Rails
Rail model: Sparco
Driver height & weight: 6'3" 230-250 depending on weightlifting program cycle. Size 33 inseam.
Fit in car: Perfect
Driver fit : Perfect
Link to seat or source: Sparco USA
Link to rail or source: Sparco USA
Certifications: FIA
Construction: One piece fiberglass
Weight: 16.53lbs
Notes: Cut the Trans tunnel, removed the E-brake, and removed the seat mount bosses to center the seat on the steering wheel. the seat was moved as far back as possible to the bulk head allowing the seat to be tilted. we dropped the column with a spacer too. The Cage was build around the seat by Mark McMahan (McMahan Autosport)http://rollcageguy.com.

I chose the seat because I am a bigger guy and for about 10minutes I actually thought this would be driven on the street occasionally so I liked the ability to remove the DTC. I removed the cushion on the seat because I felt like I wasn't sitting in the seat but on it. Once I removed the cushion I couldn't have been happier.

Sorry if this is considered mucking up the thread, but does anyone have experience with Cobra Imolas or Racer Pros? I found a UK site that has bolt-in mounts specifically for them, but of course all their pics are focused on the wrong side.

Interesting,
The handbrake location is the same over LHD and RHD.

Pitty you LHD people don't have an excuse to grab your passengers leg.

the passenger side is much much easier to get a seat into. Installing a pro2000II (the widest seat Sparco has) only took some slight hammering. We installed a pro adv on the drivers side, that took trans tunnel fabrication.

Default Corbeau FX1 Pro

Not a certified seat, but I'll post the info for us HDPE folks that are on the less pointy end...

Model: FX1 Pro
Brand: Corbeau
Size of seat: N/A
Side or bottom mount: Side... see notes below.
Adjustable or fixed rails: Fixed
Rail model: PCI
Driver height & weight: 5' 10", 195lbs, 36 waist, 32 inseam
Fit in car: Acceptable
Driver fit : Very good
Link to seat or source: FX1 Pro - Corbeau Racing Seats
Link to rail or source: 89-05 Mazda MX-5 ? PCI Racing
Certifications: None
Construction: Fiberglass
Weight: 17.5 lbs (not including brackets)

I wanted a set of decent seats for HPDE that wouldn't break the bank and be harness compatible. At the price point, it's pretty much either the Sparco Sprint, or these. Sprints are cloth over tubing, which I didn't want, and they're too tight in the shoulders. I took a ride a while back in Keith Tanner's Targa Miata with FX1 Pros, and they fit, so I pulled the trigger. When I cage the car down the road, I'll upgrade to a certified seat.

I picked up the PCI mounts used, and didn't realize at the time that they were the 'setback' version, which have the mounting holes back 1.6" compared to the standard version. I may end up replacing the driver's side with a standard version... I think it will be OK for me, but not for SWMBO, who will also be driving the car (I'm trying get a compromise position that will work for both of us). A good deal of banging on the trans tunnel is required, but the brackets bolt into the stock holes, with no need to remove the rear 'humps'.

The FX1 Pro has both side and bottom mount provisions. Using the PCI mounts (and pretty much, just mounting these low enough in a Miata to be useful) requires removing the bottom mount bosses to get them low enough. Fortunately, they're pretty easy to cut off, though it sucks having to do that to a brand new seat. I used a 4 1/2" grinder with a cutoff disc, and a sanding disc to smooth things out. I'll lay some glass cloth over the bottom to clean things up. There's some pics on Keith's site of what needs to be removed: Targa Miata

The driver's side is centered on the wheel, and I can easily pass the broomstick test with my HDHCDD bar. I may replace the bottom cushions with closed cell foam, which will give me even more clearance. The wings touch the door cards on both sides, and the front inside of the driver's seat contacts the trans tunnel.

I haven't finalized the positioning, as I'm still in the middle of a bunch of other work. I'll take some pics with me seated in the car when I get around to it.

EDIT: Updated for drop floor installation.

I finally got tired of using the fixed compromise position that didn't really fit either me or my wife, so in early 2020 I installed a Watson Racing drop floor kit so I could add sliders and keep the seat position low. Result was ~1" further drop in seat height, and works perfectly with sliders. The Watson kit is very nice, and there's a thread on it here if you want more details.
