It will be doubley hard not to brake should the guy in front of you do the above in a corner! What the hell do you do than other try to dodge him? When I'm on track, that's a bigger worry than driving my own car. In many cases, we trail by feet in the turns. I guess that's where running in proper skill level groups help keep you outta trouble, but I've seen instructors wrap their cars in to the rails here at Barbers too...

A car hasn't rolled at an autox since the 70s. Thats based on some local old autox vets.

The interesting bit with skilled drivers from I see in Spec Miata vids is how often they sorta recover and end up going in some totaly unforseeable direction. Search youtube for 'wheel to wheel racing with texans'. Theres a bit in that vid where they point out the sounds of a couple spec cars hitting each other lateraly incredibly hard as a guy who lost it actually manages to get back on track at the worst moment. Ouch. |

It was 2007, but you got the rest correct. It was on the most level of concrete too. It also shut the event down for around 2 hours because the girl driving had some minor injuries and had to be transported to the hospital. That event is what led me to let my Safety Steward License expire. I'll let someone else deal with that crap from now on.

I wonder what camera setup that is, it fared better than the miata!

I just had to install mine for my upcoming HPDE at Limerock Park no opentop cars on the track without one. Even with a hard top. O well I wanted the roll bar anyway. It also gave me reason to get door bars :bowrofl:

Now get a harness and seat! I think we should all have a good seat with harness slots, a 6 point harness, and roll bar minimum on track. My 3 point seatbelt does not feel like it would do very well at all in a crash such as the one in the video. I would probably have slipped over my lap belt(instead of submarine... airplane?):crx:

I was at Cal speedway 2 years ago. A car over took me late, but a clean pass. First turn is a hard right then a hard left. He took the right and started to spin I am at about 60mph and heading right at him. What to do? The right action and the one that I choes was to drive through his rear of his car. As he spun and I closed on him and he spun out of my way. It was a great fealing and a great learning experiance had by all. I have been on track with this person quite a few times and trusted him to do the right thing. Had I not know this person my reaction would have been quite different. Have a great day, Jared |
As far as the video goes he spun due to hitting a burm mid corner while turning at a high rate of speed while on the gas. As we can see a very bad combo. The track is Buttonwillow in sothern California. He was going into the what is now called Phill Hill (named after the late racer Phill Hill). In this turn (more of a kink) ther is no real reason to be hitting this burn at all. Yes, get close but not rape it. You are going very fast there. Comming off a small straight after a very fast sweeper.
His ass end started to go and he counter steered. You will see that his wheel shakes a bit then he starts to slide. That is him hitting the burm. He then counter steers to full lock thus allowing him to maintain the slide. He actually did a 180 and was facing the way he came from when he went off track. An amazing feat in and of it's self. As was stated had he just let th ewheel do what it wanted he mostlikely would have driven away from the off. You will also notice that he was off the gas mid slide and hard on the brakes. With all this going on at once it is har to say what was the main factor of the roll, but you can look a the basics of physics and find out that it all started from hitting the burm. As you can see there is green grass on the sides of the track. This track is in the desert. So this video was taken very early in the season most likely about this time of year. The track most likely was not up to temp which caused the tires to overexagerate his movements. It also most likly was cleaned from the rain which also hinders traction. When he slid off the track his p-side tires dug into the soft dirt/mud and his momentum had to go somewhere and that way was over and over. Have a great day, Jared |
