SuperMiata series, anyone doing it?

I didn't see a thread about this anywhere, but sorry if its a repost.

Was just wondering if anyone here plans on doing the SuperMiata series Emilio and speedventures are doing.

I'm really hoping this will take off and make its way to the east coast. I think I got a couple of guys that were into Spec that would enjoy this series even more. Especially if the engines are sealed at kraftwerks.

I'm sure Emilio will chime in on this thread, but I'd love to read thru the current standing rules on it. Like if you can run an 01 engine with vvt, what tires you can run, etc etc.

Emilio talked about the series on his blog: http://949racing.blogspot.com/

Sounds like a great idea for them to sell more kraftwerks kits. :p

flier129 08-16-2010 11:58 AM

It does, I'd figure they'd lower the cost on them if they're selling/installing them for a series though.

Still putting this whole thing together. First car being built. Other SoCal drivers planning theirs. 949 Racing won't be building cars and not a single one of the parts we offer will be Spec, with the exception of the front airdam and S/C. There wasn't anything out that that suited my needs so I designed the airdam from scratch and had them made. We'll run a spec tire (TBA).

My task is to provide the recipe. How to build the car, how to set it up and basic series structure. After that's done, I hop in a car and drive. Some else will run it. Bottom line is, the series I want to race in doesn't exist, so I built my own :D

Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Wonder how the Hankook RS3 would do as a spec tire? Cheaper than race rubber, but still pretty grippy.

...and they come in 225/45-15. :)

We will run DOT race tires.

Super Spec Miata Series as originally envisioned by Mazda Motorsports was to be a way for Spec Miata owners to increase their race speeds significantly, but without increasing the costs just as significantly. We all know it just takes cubic $$$'s to go fast, so this is not an easily obtained objective.
It is hoped that either a turbo or SC system can be added to get the HP up to 180-200 reliably and without much additional cost. Other performance upgrades such as aero packages are also being explored. The key for Mazda is to keep costs down, and to have a way to keep the competition level ( cheating made difficult). Again these are both objectives not easily obtained.
With the current economy, motorsports spending activity has generally declined, so this series like most others is a bit in limbo until the economy comes back. Posting here that you would be interested in such a series could help the effort.

If what you describe is the intent of the series that sounds like a great plan. The added complexity makes it harder to regulate the cars to the rules but if it can be done, reasonably well, it could work. I wonder if they will base it on the SM cars and build on top of that, or make it something else completely.

So we are clear. SuperMiata is not the Mazda initiated program drgoodwrench speaks of. SuperMiata is owned by 949 Racing and will be sanctioned by Speedventures.

Other than the fact that those kits are the shit...they would make a lot of sense in a spec series due to how the inlet restrictors work.

drgoodwrench 08-25-2010 08:52 PM

The rotrex does seem to be the best option in terms of keeping both costs down and keeping the cars "Spec". The 949 SuperMiata series that Emilio is building is really a great opportunity for all to see just how much potential these little motors actually have, and how well folks can engineer for speed given the same starting point.
Mazda's initial concept was to build from existing 1.6 liter Spec Miata's, and changing only those parts that made sense in terms of performance per dollar.

Maybe in 2012. For now we're just trying to get it rolling in here in SoCal. We had a logistical snag at our new shop that has kept us from working on cars for about 6 weeks now so that's really hurt the program.

Down the road, if the series gains popularity, we'll franchise it the same way we did with Miata Challenge which is now in Texas and the north east. But that's getting ahead of ourselves. Gotta get the first cars together and on track here before the end of the year for a demo event.

turotufas 10-20-2010 01:43 PM

South East would dominate the Miata Challenge. Sebring/PBIR/Daytona etc... Do it!

You do it. That's how it works. We don't come there, rent the track and advertise the series. You find some way to rent the track, pay the insurance, promote the series, get sponsors, etc. Use our rules and logos. We post your results on the national Miata Challenge site.

Plenty of HPDE Miata guys in SE to get it rolling, just takes a few volunteers and a promoter willing to let you guys run a competition within their event.
