Transmission woes

So last night I was crushing with some friends, doing pulls on my car everything was fine except some mis shifts. On the way home driving normal my shifter locked up, super hard to move between gears, almost have to double fist it. Not sure if I bent a shaft or something or broke the bushing on the shifter. Any one have this issue? It's a 2002 6 spd. If its screwed and I have to pull it out of the car I'm gonna rebuild it and call liberty gears and see if the can face-plate and treat the gears on 1-4 and keep 5-6 synchro mesh

Sounds like you bent a shift fork by manhandling it.

Yeah I wouldn't doubt that. Where would I go about finding a factory service manual to buy with transmission specs and diagrams

It's amazing liberty gears is known worldwide, and i can practically see their tiny little building from my house.

Well looking on there site at the face plating, it is legit as they are know worldwide as said and have a great rep, guys faceplate there Hondas and temecs and love it. And it's a lot cheaper than a quiefe that is still a five speed in a weaker case.

Did you pop out your shifter to see if all the plastic bushings are still there? LMK if you need any help. I live 1 mile away now remember lol.

Not yet, this week im gonna that's my 1st thought. That's the easy fix. But normaly it's not that easy

240_to_miata 08-19-2012 09:42 PM

Well if you want to test a different shifter or anything like that I have my 6 spd sitting outside of my car right now lol. Doubt I will need it for another week or so.

We broke a 5th - Reverse shifter fork on a 6 speed from a 10 AE Miata. (yes 5-R share a synchro hub while 6th is in the rear housing... a design with odd shift linkage to make the 5-6 shift seem normal.)

Symptoms were a normal quick shift 4th to 5th resulted in a false neutral. Pulling the shifter back to the real neutral position and a slow shift (like 1 second) seemed to work ok. I completed next 2 laps of a practice session and returned to pits. Also occasional sound like a rock hitting an exhaust pipe. I assume this was the gears grinding up the broken bits... Transmission jamed into Reverse while parking by trailer... :-(

Failure happened in the 2nd practice session (Friday)... Bought a 1990 5 speed from a JDM parts shop about an hour away and changed it in the paddock. Back on track for the race the next day ;-)

Photos tell the sad story.

Other than the broken fork and lots of ground up aluminum there was no apparent damage. So, I completed a quick cleaned up the ground up aluminum, changed the fork and 5th and 6th synchros. All back together shifting better than ever.

well i just pulled the shifter and the bushing on the bottom is fine, however i have absolutly no oil in the turret. Now i dont know if i forgot to fill it, its not like me to forget something like that. but i have done dumb things from time to time. im gonna get some gear oil and fill it back up. but would it be possible for something to break and allow the oil to flow into the tranny.

If the oil doesnt work im gonna have to pull the tranny and the car is gonna be laid up untill next year so i can rebuild the tranny with the faceplated and treated gears and new bearings and shift forks, and rebuild the rear end with a clutch type diff and 3.6 r+p

The 6 speed main gear case and shifter linkage share oil. The shift linkage is lubricated from oil spashing off the 6th gear pair and output shaft. No "topping up" of the turret is needed. Doing so will only overfill your transmission...

Ok good to know, so sounds like Im gonna be pulling the tranny.

I also called Liberty Gears about face plating today. The only Mazda they offer this for is the rx7. Not to say they won't do it for a Miata 6spd but they need to see interest. Funny thing is, they got an email about this right before I called them. I will make a separate thread gauging interest. Otherwise it would have to be a one off type of thing .

Which RX7 trans? That's a fairly common tranny swap. Not a horrible option
