Well no, the *cheapest* aluminum bodied shocks, if you wanted to just gut them for a DIY project would be some knock-off taiwanese stuff.
The Feal range offers a very affordable pricepoint for aluminum monotube shocks built in the USA with extended tophats, custom valving and your choice of any spring rates out of the box. Lots of value, but certainly there are cheaper options if you want to forego some of those features (I wouldn't). $75/corner for a revalve by people who know what they are doing and more importantly, can translate what you are asking for in layman's/driver's terms into valving changes to accomplish what you want is quite reasonable. Consider that even $75 is half the price that some of the big names charge. -Ryan |
Having tried 4 different shock setups on my car, the last being revalved Bilstein with an initial budget of $1200-1500 I can tell you that you are much better off getting something that already has the R&D done. You are not going to get lucky and just magically end up with a balanced and well perfoming setup. There are just too many variables involved with valving, spring selection, travels, top hats, tender springs, bushings/bearings ect. The guys that can do the circle track valving for cheaper are pro's at circle track tuning which has a different set of requirements than roadcorse or autocross tuning.
I know little about the Feals, but they sound unbeatable at that price point. If you are serious about performance and long time use (can grow from autocross to roadcorse) go Xida. I wish I did! I have spent more money trying different things on a re-valved DIY setup that I could have paid for Xida's and I am sure I do not have 90% the performance that they do. |
