Just a quick question. I have an Outback XT manual with some light tuning (295whp/320ft/lbs) and class IV size hitch. Is it realistic to think about getting a good tow dolly for my full weight MSM (three hours or less of towing one-way)? Is this tough on the Miata and not really worth it?

After having my clutch fail at my last track day I am inclined to start towing the Miata so I am not stranded.

I have an 05 outback xt limited 5 speed auto, with class IV hitch, and have towed my miata right at 2,000 miles on a tow dolly. It was completely stock Outback. It had good power, towed well, brakes were a bit sketchy but manageable. If I towed like that every day I'd upgrade my brakes, but I don't so I just kept my distance from folks when going fast. Mine is now stage 2 so I'm sure it would ****** on it a bit more, but really it just needs better brakes to really make it good. I got 16-17mpg towing too (about 20-21 not towing).

I believe it's best practice to remove the driveshaft when towing with a dolly, but I will let someone with more towing experience verify that.

I have always removed my driveshaft when towing more than 20 miles. Which is pretty much all but 1 or 2 towes.

Saying that, from my research many have towed thousands of miles with no issues without disconnecting it. The only caveat is that it needs to have a 6 speed.

MSM = 6-spd.
OXT with full LGT brakes and SS lines, along with 101 load rated tires. so that might help. Will likely shell for a tow dolly with brakes, though.

Seems like the barrier for the drive shaft it putting it back together at a track and fighting through the bracing? I need to research that now.

Thanks for the feedback.

The reasoning is that the input shaft lubes the gearbox. So spinning the output shaft means you ahve parts inside that aren't getting proper oiling.

That said there are plenty of anecdotes about people driving cross country towing their miata with the driveshaft in.

I personally wouldn't risk it on a MSM 6 speed.

The only issues you have with disconnecting the driveshaft is having to plug the rear input shaft so you don't lose all your gear oil.

An OBXT with electric/surge brake tow dolly will have no issues if smart.

Default What do YOU use to tow your track car?

5-speed with thousands of miles on a tow dolly crew checking in. Removing driveshaft not necessary. I've been doing this for years.

It is 500 miles from my home to Road Atlanta one way. I've dragged this little car there numerous times. And many closer tracks, too.

I gotta ask: How did you go about doing the brake upgrade? Where did you buy the parts, and what parts did you buy? (example: upright? caliper brackets?) I've heard that's a great upgrade for the OXT, I'd really like to do it whenever my OXT needs new brakes.

Good info. Question, do you think the same would be true for a 6 speed? Would be awesome to not have to worry/deal with pulling the driveshaft in the future!

I've been flat towing a 6-spd for over a year. Over 3K miles. No issues.

IIRC, the 6 speed lubes from the input shaft, so that would be no bueno. My Mazda 6-speed trans service manual is at home though, so I can't reference it right now. I think I uploaded it to the forum at some point.

Dunno if I'll be buying back my totaled 7.3 - It did have up upgraded turbo, injectors, programmer, and a new trans with less than 15k on it. I'm hoping State Farm will take all that in consideration when they offer me totaled price. I've got receipts.

Ma new ride shipping in from TX
I'm suffering from sinus cold - meds have me wired - there's no other reason I'd be up at 5:30am

People in Europe been towing cars/campers/etc with their TDIs with this exact hitch for years.

Gonna test it out next week since I'm moving apartments to see how it does with a loaded trailer. I know there are a some who think I'm dumb for doing this but it has a stage 2 clutch, EGT gauge, 330 tq, 3 subframe braces, stiffer sway bars, GTI brake calipers, and stiffer springs. Should do great as long as I'm not dumb. Been towing motorcycle trailers since I was 16 so I'm not exactly new to this.

I wish I could find a class 2 hitch like this for my Mazdaspeed3, I would like to dolly tow the miata to the tracks around here (250mi to Hallet & TWS, 300 to MSR houston, less than 100 to MSR Cresson and Eagles Canyon) but I can only find class 1 hitches. There are class 2 hitches for my wife's Tucson, but I dont trust its brakes, its less stable, and the 4 banger in it is so gutless it would take me 20mi to get to 55mph. I don't really have room for another vehicle, so its going to force me to upgrade the wife's car to something that can tow and be a family hauler. I love the speed3 too much to get rid of it, its just too much fun as a daily driver......
