What is your vision of a Pro Street Miata?

I could not be any happier with my Track Prepped Miata. It exceeded all expectations! I am now looking to replace my current weekend toy with a Pro Street style Miata. What would your vision be? Where do you draw the line between street/track mods? I live in NorCal so Heat/AC are not big deals. I could live with AC more so that heat if given the choice. So far this is what I have.

NB2
TSE turbo kit
TSE/MS3
TSE Built block
Mild head work
Xida ACE (rates?)
Poly Bronze suspension bushings
TC Design roll bar with half door bars
Lotus seats
949 10” wheels with R-S4 tires
11.75 Wilwood front, stock 1.8 rear.
6 speed
3.9 Torsen

MR shifter(any config, but a must-have)

k24madness 04-16-2018 03:16 PM

Sounds like I am on the right path. I’ll need to budget for a built long block though. ABS is more popular that I expected.

Sav I’ll take you up on that offer. I’ll also cart down some E85 :). I like the idea of 9”s for the street. Given the usage the added comfort would be a welcome trade off.

Midtenn 04-16-2018 04:45 PM

I'm going to go off the reservation here, but if its for a primarily street car:

NC3 Club (White w/ Red or Red w/ Black) soft-top (I don't like the look of the PRHT)
Super20 flares
AutoEXE front lip
NOPRO Spoiler
BBFW RZ roll bar in Red
Advan RGII's or Gram Lite 57C6's
Bilstein DIY coilovers (or Xida's if they ever manifest)
Fab9 EFR turbo kit with full 3" turbo back ( :blah: )
Hardtop (for the winter)

k24madness 04-16-2018 05:42 PM

If you really want to go off the reservation you’d be talking ND. Thought about that briefly too but came right back around to the NB. I was tempted by a NA with NB1 motor but in the end I think the NB is best.

k24madness 04-16-2018 05:43 PM

Double post

concealer404 04-16-2018 06:00 PM

Unpopular opinion: For street/DD things, NC or FRS/BRZ will both be better options at same price end game as NB.

If i had gotten my NB even 6 months later, i would have not gotten it, and gotten an NC/FRS/BRZ instead.

Not mad. Just a small bit of "dammit!"

EErockMiata 04-16-2018 06:03 PM

If you want to cut out much of the work to get there (basically most everything save the turbo kit and pleb xida's) let me know. I have a car in socal I'll be selling that is the NA version of the build you are discussing.

pdexta 04-16-2018 08:32 PM

This was kind of my target with my current car. I bought a high mile 2000 SE and dropped the ghetto-rods only motor out of my 11.6 @ 124 gutted NA car into it. There's certainly some potential left in it, but I broke my last 6 speed trying to push the limits. I feel like mid 300's is a good "safe-ish" range for the drivetrain.

Every day I come outside and look at my "daily driver" g35, think "not today", and I get in my miata instead. I think I've actually driven my daily driver once in the last 2 weeks, when it was raining.

I've been craving something with a little (a lot?) more power on the street recently. My high-compression VVT is fun, but most of my drive to work is highway. The ND would be like a newer version of what I already have with more comfort and a transmission I'd always be thinking about breaking if I added boost.

Your power levels are just about what I had in mind. I thought that should keep the drivetrain safe for a while on the street. I imagine you killed the 6 speed at the strip or launching it on the street.

I'd do something like acamas but with a 3.6 rear (vs the 3.9 I think he has)

Had 3.63s for a while, testing 3.308s now. Not quite ready for prime time but the ratio is so sweet. For a 300whp street car, they are perfect. Working with the MFG to improve them now.

nitrodann 04-17-2018 03:21 AM

Are you able to loosely ballpark the price? Say... 500-1000usd, for example.

Dann

ayoustin 04-17-2018 10:04 AM

I'm building what I consider a fun street car. Boost is fun but I love how naturally aspirated miatas can be thrashed pretty much anywhere all the time.

Still have a fair amount to do but the ending is this:
- 1999 NB1 w/5 speed and 4.30 torsen
- 15x9 Storm S1 w/225 Rival
- Ohlins DFV coilovers
- IRP shifter
- Harddog rollbar
- Momo Start seats
- PCI seat mounts
- Schroth harnesses
- OMP Corsica 330 steering wheel
- RB header
- Goodwin Racing catback
- Blackbird Fabworx engine mounts
- RB swaybars
- RB front swaybar brace
- Braided brake and clutch lines

Looks like Falcone still has my BRZ for sale. You should go test drive it. Still has the MXP exhaust and Ground Control coilovers.

I drove Vteckiller2000's BRZ a bit last weekend. Has KW V3s, flash, intake pipe, headers, exhaust of some sort. Was good. 10/10 would DD.

Not buying anything that isn't a house at the moment.

z31maniac 04-17-2018 10:58 AM

My Pro Street Miata would be a typical build, in the past I've ruined to many cars I drive daily.

ND Miata
Softer setup of XIDAs
17x9 sticky tires
Full Exhaust and flash (E85 if they have one now)
Roll bar
BBKs
Engine, oil, diff coolers

Enjoy.

OptionXIII 04-17-2018 11:41 AM

I guess I'm going for this now... I had originally hoped to do a K-swap, but ended up going for a supercharger. Fully anticipate getting some hate for that. My parts are pretty tame compared to most, and everything but the roll bar bought used or off my old car.

Current status, including parts awaiting install

2001 NB2 LS, 5spd/4.3FDR, No ABS, Sport bracing and brakes.
MP62 Hotside, TDR intercooler, MS3 w/ E85 sensor and CAN wideband
NA6 interior swap, Momo Start seat made super comfy
Blackbird Fabworx Single diagonal roll bar
FM frame rails
Mazdaspeed Bilsteins, FM springs. Probably 6 different ARBs to experiment with. Bauer ELBJs for das camber. Depowered steering w/ idler pulley
15x7.5 street wheels, 15x9 track steamrollers
Morimoto HIDs in stock NB2 low beam

For a money no object build?

K-series engine: K24 block, K20 head and crankshaft. Great rod ratio, lots of revs.
TVS900 supercharger, Air to Water intercooler in a custom manifold.
6 speed, 3.63 FDR
Revalved Bilsteins and stiffer springs
ABS
Lotus Elise seats
A roll bar that lets 3-point belts work, or, different mounting arrangement for the 3 point belts. 6 point harness for track work.
Drop spindles
TSE brake kit
Twin Bixenon projector headlights. 3000k yellows and 3800k normal beams.

Or, just buy a faster car to begin with. I've always loved C4 Corvettes, and the new BRZ and ND Miata are just gorgeous.

unk577 04-17-2018 03:51 PM

For a drag car I'd go this route

icantlearn 04-17-2018 05:25 PM

My build:
NB2 (TSE Catalog Car)
TSE 6258 Turbo kit
TSE stage 2 shortblock, supertech valve springs (not yet installed)
TSE Dynapro BBK w/ 3" singular ducts
TSE Rad
TSE 16 row oil cooler
custom 3" exhast
Racing Beat front sway bar/ 949 endlinks.
xidas
Blackbird GT3 roll bar
15x9/225s for street
poly bushings with oilite sleeves
Sparco Evo

Maybe I don’t understand what a “pro street” car is. I think my current car is sort of in this direction, mainly a fun street car that does HPDE. I agree with most of the stuff above, but big power/tall gears doesn’t do much for me. Same with big wheels/tires, which you need for big power. Heavy stuff that crashes around on bumpy roads, makes steering heavy, tramlines on the highway, etc.

If the only goal for the car is fun, sign me up for NA chassis, a fast spooling 220ish, 3.9 or 4.1 gears, 15x8 with 205 tires. Maybe even 195’s on 15x7. A/C is a must. Canvas soft top. With that car I can hoon around like a teenager without getting speeding tickets or killing someone.

I’m probably not very good at this game based on the other posts.

This has always been the goal for my car... but I’ve stepped over the line into what many wouldn’t want on the street. here’s what I’d want for a killer. Street NA

-moss low pro lights
-leather seats
-manual steering
-VVT engine / ms3, intake, RB header and exhaust
- A/C
- 1.6 dash
- nice stereo with good components in doors
- no rollbar
- lightweight 15x7s with sticky rubber.. bonus points for something rare/authentic... but Must be light!
- comfy suspension with moderate drop... I like FM springs and Illuminas, but idk the illuminas are available anymore.

Going to second the unpopular opinion, 17+ BRZ/86. Ideally a Performance Pack with Brembos then you only add an oil cooler, RaceComp Tarmac Springs, header, tune and you're done. I'd even re-use the included 17x7.5 and just put a stickier 215/45/17 tire on it. I bought one in January and the Miata hasn't gotten much love since.

Not for good but for now the 86 is my focus. Currently my wife uses the Miata for HPDE and once I have a proper garage space I have a long term plan for turning it into the car it can be without compromise.

SamS 04-19-2018 08:00 AM

I haven't driven the newer ones, but I sold my 2013 BRZ to buy and turbo my NB2, and have zero regrets. They look and handle great, but the lack of torque was too annoying for me.

sonofthehill 04-19-2018 07:06 PM

Happy to give you another ride in my car, seems bone stock until you stomp the throttle, but you know that already. Super comfortable with the ability to go around all the snobs in our neighborhood. Perfect.

k24madness 04-19-2018 07:12 PM

@sonofthehill, I’ll take you up on that! No knock on your car but I would be looking to build something a bit more sporty. You on the other hand have the ultimate sleeper. Looks damn near stock till you stomp on it. I was mighty impressed durning our last outing. I bet it’s even stronger now!

Marin needs more hot rod Miata’s!

$600

There's a thread on here about then. i ordered during the last run and the order was cancelled when the machining was confirmed to be subpar. To the manufacturer's credit they seemed receptive. I'll be patient until they've been confirmed good before ordering again.

AlwaysBroken 04-20-2018 06:28 PM

I've been trying to figure this out for over a decade and I think I am close to having it figured out...

300 whp or so. Going significantly above this is just an expensive danger zone. If I had the money to do this in a Miata, I'd have the money to do it more comfortably and reliably in a used z06.
High ride height Xidas, FM front bar, stock rear.
Prob 15x10 w/rs4s for baller status, tho anything 205 width and above is probably fine on the streets to be honest. Lack of traction will only help with drivetrain reliability.
Minimal aero, just smoothing and ducting, nothing to reduce ground clearance. On the street, ground clearance is worth it's weight in gold.
Working AC
Everything in reliable condition
6 speed with a 3.6 or five speed with a 4.1 and swap them out more often.

sonofthehill 04-20-2018 09:05 PM

If you show up Wednesday before elimination starts, I will be happy to take you down the 1/4 mile. Otherwise, just send me a text, I am around all weekend, possibly it will be nice weather for swimming too.

Where's that thread? How long ago did this all happen?

3.3 with a 6 speed sounds dreamy after I ran it through the calculator. Especially for 600 bucks with decent quality. A slightly tall first gear but otherwise it's basically a five speed with an overdrive on the end.

18psi 04-21-2018 01:40 AM

it's still just a dream. way too many trials and failures so far to start planning.
Andrew is smart enough to have learned his lesson and isn't announcing anything until it's properly tested and a real thing.

If that was towards me, thanks! If not, then GTFO! :P (i kid)

I think i'm going to like the car. It needs some small sorting and finishing. Having some NVH issues, but i have some low-hanging fruit to handle there. It drives a liiiiitttle more "manic" than i was hoping, but i'm not sure if dumbing it down from here is going to give me something i like to drive. Ride quality is outstanding, it sounds AWESOME, and looks cool. If i can get it to idle right (low when cold, high when hot, suspect IACV), CC to work, and get a nice stereo in it, it's going to be gucci.

Downside: it's faster than my "race car." Feels bad.

Hey Harry, you're overseas... any chance you have a "diagnostic flow" you could point me to for a JDM/EUDM 99-00? This car is running 100% as a BP5A equipped car, which as far as i know, means the OBD2 port isn't functional. (Certainly doesn't not have functioning CEL)

HarryB 05-05-2018 10:46 AM

Yes, it was towards you :P

BP5A means it would be identical to a EUDM 99-00 NB, which does not have an OBD2 AFAIK. I *think* I can find the factory diagnostic procedures, but I do not have them in hand at the moment (I drive a lame 1.6 NB2).
Speaking of... here's my list. Base is a 2004 Strato Blue 1.6 NB2 with 5 speed box and sport brakes, 100k miles but very well maintained. I do not want to swap the 1.6 for now due to legislation; can be done, but it is a bit of a bureaucratic hassle to do so and be legal, and for sure I do not want risking my car to be confiscated. Car is/will be built with maybe 1% track time in mind (not that we have any worthy tracks around), 29% spirited driving on mountain passes/ b-roads (we have a TON of those) and 70% daily commute. Primary goal was an OEM+ build in all aspects, with a few retro-inspired details. Spec list/build plan below.
