So, would this bring up safety concerns at a tech inspection? I mean technically you are no longer protected from the fuel tank with a metal bulkhead. I guess you line the backside with aluminum tape to satisfy tech regs.

NASA 15.4.1 states a “solid” bulkhead. But does not mention what material.

Guess you can add a foil tape on the back and/or build it with flame retardant resin.

I never really understood this rule, doesn't the chassis count as a bulkhead? Is this similar with other cars? e.g. that the floor of a hatchback does not count as a bulkhead?

The fuel filler pipes/hoses run through the trunk. The conservative interpretation is that you should have a bulkhead protecting you from those.

LIGHTEST CAR EVER

What is the lightest race prepared, road race ready, Miata ever?

What class has the lowest min weight? Probably SCCA FP at 2075 comp weight. That's an NA6. I think a full Runoffs timebomb B6 makes around 160whp.
Lighter Miatas have been built for autocross and time attack.

Why do you ask?

Depends on your definition of "race ready" based on the rules of the racing series you're referring to.

The absolute lightest-weight Miatas all look something like this:

SCCA GT2 Miata 1950 lb. at finish line with driver. 2.5 MZR engine

Can it be done with a tub car?

Yes. Won't be cheap though. You'll need some tube frame extensions on the tub and a fully composite body. You have some major advantages in the GT ruleset but to do it cheaply you could just start with an old E production car as a base for your GT2.

Nope. Old as dirt. Prototype of the Catfish frame. Still have it, and was thinking of making it into a cone-crushing drift hoon.

Gents,

Can I remove the seatbelt reels without removing the roll bar?

Thanks,

Wingman703 01-16-2023 02:12 PM

Nope. Rollbars gotta come out to have enough room.

Shit. Installing that rollbar is still the most frustrating thing I've had to do to the car, and that was a dozen years ago.
