windshield talk

OG racing Doesn't sell windshields. But we do have many friends in the industry. Five star race car bodies has released a very promising windshield that might be of some interest to many track going members here

Thoughts?

ILoveOffRamps 07-24-2014 11:04 PM

You have any more details? intent? material? lead time? time to market?

ThePass 07-25-2014 01:21 AM

Thoughts on windshield:

Chop it off.

(some day a long, long time from now I will be doing this)

that's fine as long as you upgrade your helmet. when the car in front of you leaves a connecting rod on the track, you'll need something to catch it.

depends on the state.
IL- you need to keep the OEM glass.
NC- If you have a windshield, it needs a wiper. true story..

You say already available but I don't see it in that link. Maybe I'm tarded but I don't think I'm blind

Formed Polycarbonate Racing Windows by Five Star Race Car Bodies
"We can form windows from factory glass for limited quantity orders."
I.e. Getting Miata windshilds made by them is not big task, but a GB (and some work) would probably be needed to get the price down close to their stocked level ($450 ?).

got to get the universal one (or any window they offer will be over sized) and cut it. it's not going to be a cheap option btw. I'm sure it's the i want a lightweight lexan window and i don't want to catch a starter in the face option. If we send them emails and express interest i'm sure they will produce miata windshields.

Didn't Andrew have a fancy pants anti-fog/watershedding windshield? Check with him.

SHIELDS Premier Windshields - Formed and Hard Coated Polycarbonate Windshields and Windows World Leader

Emilio turned me onto these guys a few years ago. They have a pre-cut Miata-specific shield that fits perfectly. 3/16", OEM fitment, $434+ship. Glue it in with Silicone RTV just like the stock glass, clean it with soap-based cleaners and a soft cloth. 11lbs lighter than stock glass (9lb vs 20lb). The shipping costs make it hard for me to actually make money on them, so I don't stock them, but I have done group buys for CA guys before. It's something I would do again with enough interest.

No additional supports across the windshield needed?

EricJ 07-29-2014 06:52 PM

I don't see the ROI of the 'special windshield'.

I had the guy at the local shop come to my house and install a new windshield for $125, leaving me more money for tires.

Double O 86 07-29-2014 07:10 PM

It would appear that the ROI = eleven pounds off the top. Combine that with a lightweight hardtop (with a similar Plexiglas/Lexan rear window) and you could have many much pound reduction off the highest point of the car.

Just sayin', with no charts or graphs. :2cents:

Leafy 07-29-2014 07:39 PM

Since we're talking about windshields. I heard that the really really cheap chinese OEM replacements are ~6lbs lighter than stock. Has anyone tested this? And is it all distorted as fuck? I have to have OEM glass in my class, and my windshield is getting all pitted and shity and has a small crack.

Nope. No wind buffeting at sane speeds (<160mph), no indication that it's anything other than glass unless you get up close or tap on it. Apparently the 3/16" version starts to buffet a little at ~200mph, so Racing Shields sells a 1/4" version as well.

The ROI is 11lbs of weight reduction above the beltline of the car. If that doesn't interest you, the $125 glass will do you just fine.

My current upgrade project is to remove 11 (x10) lbs. from between the steering wheel and the back of the seat; at the beltline, mine.

cordycord 08-04-2014 01:36 AM

Poly screens are technically race only, as true street windscreens require DOT/ANSI certified safety glass. There are a couple of states that don't require windshields, BUT if you have a windshield then you also are required to have wipers. And defrost. However much of this is up to the interpretation of your local constabulary. Side and rear windows are open season for non-glass.

All it takes is one drive in a chopped car, engine screaming, wind rushing by, tire chunks flying off the tires of the GTR ahead of you and pinging off your helmet, to make you a firm believer and start scheming how you can take your car over to the dark side.

Been kicking the idea around for about 15 years. Finally pulled the trigger last year. Seam welded, caged and reinforced front/rear sections. Just waiting for the K20 kit from David. Should have it on track next year. 250whp. 10" wheels and 1700lbs. Should do the trick.

I agree with that, Just make sure you have a good helmet. Just remember felipe massa, and James Hinchcliffe are with us today because they had good head gear. James uses the Bell Rs7.

That sounds mighty familiar to something that might have happened in Chuckwalla a couple years ago ;)

The fun factor on a chopped car is a good bit higher than a normal car, even a convertible.
First time I drove a Renault sports racer got me thinking, then a drive in a windshieldless Caterham was all I needed to get me over the edge.

My 3/16" shields windshield does start to deform around 120mph sometimes. But mine is bolted in pretty good...

Actually the GTR spitting stuff at my visor was Streets of Willow riding shotgun. Driving the car at Chuckwalla solidified my love ;)

Props for a killer livery :D

I've noticed this in some in car vids from either Emilio or William's car going around the banking at ACS (just over 120 mph).
The center would cave in ever so slightly, a center brace should make it go away.

Yup. The 3/16" flutter at about 120. Guessing the 1/4" would not and a brace under the 3/16" would stabilize it.

You think "maybe too much wind", but then your field of vision opens up and you become even more connected to everything going on around you.

Leafy 08-15-2014 06:26 PM

If I ever start to apply sawsall to windshield header on a racecar I really hope I stop my self and say, "damn, maybe I should just go buy a formula car" Those formula fords and F1000s really arent all that expensive.

asmasm 08-15-2014 08:23 PM

What is the deal with windshields on kit cars vs street cars? I know I can probably get an Exocet through kit car inspections in NC but spending 6k on an Exocet is less appealing than $20 in reciprocating saw blades. Can I sawzall my car and then claim it is a kit car ? :)
