Default 400 wheel torque + hoosier slicks = ...

Didn't have my SLR with me on the track so you get a crappy iphone pic.

Things were going well up until I got on the gas after turn 11 at Laguna Seca. The back end kicked up as the hub sheered and the tire exited out the rear. Came back down on the rotor which snapped in half. As the car came to a rest I saw the wheel rolling by off into the sand trap. I'll have to get my friend's video who was right behind me. He didn't get it as the hub snapped, but you can see the wheel still rolling off.

Overall not too much damage, but without an extra rear hub and some welding gear + 2.5" exhaust pipe I had to take the car home. Getting it on the trailer was fun.

That's scary stuff right there. I always figured the hub nut would prevent that from happening? lol

Whoa.......that's a man's Miata. I could've sworn this was going to be in a drag racing app after that first pic. How long had it been since you replaced the hubs before this?

Dam, that's impressive! Glad to see it wasn't any worse like it could have been. Obviously you had no indication of it failing before it let go?

Factory hub? I have been considering pre-emptively swapping to the V8R hubs/axles.

Factory hub - I think. I'll take a closer look tomorrow. The previous owner's notes said the bearings were replaced and studs were pressed in, but nothing about new hubs. I just e-mailed v8r to see if I can get a set of hubs from them.

No warning before it let go. Just happened as soon as I got on the gas.

Props for having huge nuts! Glad the car damage was minimal - now you have a baller story to tell.

What's left of the hub after I pressed it out of the knuckle and pressed out the lugs. I guess it's not a stock hub. It's 26 spline, however the diameter is bigger. Only thing I could match it with was an escort zx2, but not sure if the spline size is right.

umm considering that SM guys dont run 400 whp on slicks im gonna have to say no. This looks to be just a to much torque and not enough give situation to me. Must have been a hell of a ride.

I just love it when someone posts something like this right before I have a race weekend scheduled.

Don't worry, you only have 399 torque, you'll be fine

Good the car didnt get smacked up. That is a pretty cool failure. How does the other hub look?

I'm sad.

Another reason for me to not go past 200 whp.

The car is still on the trailer so I haven't had a chance to check the other hub. I was hoping to replace the broken one and drive the car off, but I haven't found a replacement that works. If no one wants to inspect the hub I might ghetto mig weld it back together so I can bolt on a wheel and push or drive it off.

2 and 11 exit are especially bad on the right side at Laguna as I'm in third gear (or second if I get stuck behind someone) and applying lots of throttle on exit. The back end always kicks out on those turns. Most of the right hand stuff is high speed except for the bottom of the corkscrew but there isn't isn't a lot of room before 9.
