Default Why are tire pyrometers so expensive?

Why tire probe pyrometers are so expensive? Even the cheapest is around $125, and barely has as many functions as a 1980s calculator with memory recall.

Cheap temp probes for school or home projects are like $8, so what makes tire probes so different? Is it something about the actual probe itself?

The lowest and second lowest longacres differ by about $30... the difference being a protective box and a rubber cap. Seriously? This makes me wonder if it's just mark up for an expensive hobby.

Sharing your industry knowledge or experience extremely appreciated.

I think it's bonding the thermocouple junction to something stiff enough to actually pierce a tire and the small market demand for something like that. I've used cheap probes like this with a multimeter that reads type K thermocouples, seems to work alright. Could use this with any of the thrermocouple amps you've seen on those cheap projects...

They come up on ebay pretty cheap used occasionally if you are willing to wait and watch for a deal.

Awesome find on the cheap probe! I use something similar (but paid a hair more) in a multimeter with a Type K adapter. It’s been working perfectly for me for a couple years now. You also kill two birds with one stone since you have a multimeter with you now if electrical problems pop up.

with that said, even at over $100 the data it’s given me has been more than worth it. Yeah it’s a rip off and money pit, but so is racing in general.

Just wanted to say thanks again. Arrived from PRC, took just over three weeks to get stateside. Worked perfectly.

Inexpensive tire probe recommended by Deezums.
