i know i’ll get heat for this but i’m getting my 1.6 long nose machines since cylinder wall have groves and needs to be honed. miata was boosted prior to tear down for oil consumption. lose a quart in 3 hours. rings are probably the fault. i plan to get ebay rods(stock in picture, bearings nothing concerning) but not sure if i should stick with stock pistons with CR at 9 or super tech for 8.6/1. only looking to get 200≈250 hp and already made that. not looking for more power.
Oversized oe pistons are probably close enough in price to just get forged, doesn’t sound like your cylinder walls are in good enough condition to reuse stock sized pistons.
For 200-250whp why not just replace it with another stock engine? That's a pretty reasonable goal for one and likely cheaper than machining and parts, even if you BP swap.
If 250 is your max goal I'd just source a used engine. Like curly said it sounds like the walls are bad and thats going to cost more in work and parts especially if you need to go bigger sized. Plenty of stock engines make 250hp for many miles. If I was you I would just try to get an engine that wasn't forced induction and try to do a leakdown and compression test before you buy it.
