Default airbag deactivation

I was surprised to be told the way to get rid of airbags is to detonate them.
But a friend and I had a fair sized collection from building race cars, so we gamely went about getting rid of them.
Just two tricks; a really long cord in a big open yard so you are far away, and removing the grounding bar inside the connector. It prevents static discharge when lying disconnected on the shelf.

And someone to take the videos. Clearly they are dangerous and could kill you if not handled properly, as shown in this educational video.

Haha, thanks for sharing. That looks like a good time. Is it just 12v that sets them off?

Some years back I had my NB8A driver bag activate at Pi in a collision, in-car vid operating. Veeery educational! I was wearing helmet/harness/HANS, visor open about 1cm for ventilation. Airbag was in an ADM car where it is a secondary restraint and therefore (I am told) less powerful than those in markets where the bag is the primary restraint, in-car video was recording.

I had no hand/wrist damage, as the crossing car was totally unexpected and I was not tensed up/gripping tightly. At the medical centre they explained hand/wrist bone/tendon was a very common airbag injury, due to the driver gripping the wheel tightly on seeing the impending accident.

The camera never recorded the activation, one frame you see the flash of the crossing car immediately prior to activation, the next the bag is deflating - it really IS a bomb going off!!

Afterwards I noticed a windburn on my cheeks, a minor irritant. Only later on replaying the video I realised my visor was up - pushed up by the bag entering the gap and expanding, at the same time , and brushing against my cheeks.

The passenger bag also activated, only noteworthy in that it knocked the rear view mirror off the screen!!

Treat those bags with respect kiddies!!

I had a spare from upgrading my NA to an NB wheel, so I used it to push out some dents in a beater flip miata I had. Worked surprisingly well!

EDIT: This was in slo-mo on my phone, but seems YT converted it to realtime. Oh well. Still entertaining. Note the hearing pro doing a great job sitting on the hood lol
