I was wondering if a vented hood like the one below (from carbon miata, pictures are from their site) would let in enough water in the engine bay to damage any components or to let water into a turbo if there was one. Im not very good with aerodynamics but i do know that some water might hit the alternator and near where a turbo would sit, would this hood let enough water to damage anything?

 

Since we don't have a mechanical radiator fan, the engine bay kind of resembles a running dishwasher when driving in the rain. So, some rainwater trickling in while parked will not make any difference as long as said water is not running straight down on the spark plug wells.

 

Weird, I thought I posted on this last night, guess not. I live in Oregon (lots of rain), and don’t recommend vented hoods to customers who don’t garage their cars, or aren’t dedicated track cars. Rain will make bolts and manifolds rust, belt squeak, and unless you’re religious about cleaning your engine bay, it’ll get dirty easier too. We have a number of customers who bolt on vented hoods for track days/summer, as it does help with under hood heat.

I have a vented hood in my Dodge Stealth in Florida. I don’t have running issues with it, but rust on bolts and manifolds has been annoying and scary, and some water did go down into the spark plugs holes because of the position of the vents. Not a great sight and I wouldn’t do it again. I actually plan on going back to an OEM style hood as a result.

 

Ahem..
​​​​​​ That's exactly why I built an active hood vent. It waits for 2 minutes to vent the heat and closes once I shut the engine off.
