I have seen a few older threads here on failures of DW pumps. I have a DW200 to use on a new build and am a bit sketched out on using it now. Has anyone had any recent issues? Should I be ok to use it ?
I’ll save money on a lotta parts, cheap manifolds, cheap intercoolers, cheap couplers, cheap turbos, but I don’t recommend cheating out on injectors/ecu/fueling. If the pump has a history of having issues, it’s not worth the $100. If you do use it, or for any other pump, make sure to add a quality, logged pressure sensor to your ECU. I’ve seen a lot of pump installation issues, the pressure sensor helps detect issues at full load (high boost/rpm/throttle) when you can’t always be staring at a gauge.
for what it’s worth, I work at a shop that does a lot of aftermarket fueling changes, and we only install TI automotive/walbro pumps with no quality issues.
I'm probably one of the posters that you saw having issues with a DW200.
Take my experience with a grain of salt.
At this point I don't think the pump is the problem; as I noted in my build thread, it stopped working while idling in the paddock - this is almost certainly a wiring or ECU issue.
There are far, far more people who are using a DW200 without problems than there are people who are having issues.
Only issue I have had with my DW300 is that it pulls tons of current. Actually melted out my OEM plug. I just installed the Radium Engineering fuel sender which should solve the problem once and for all. I do have the Trackspeed fuel pump relay kit which uses the stock wiring only to switch on a high current relay but then the plug itself became the weak link. The Radium fuel sender has pretty big lugs for ring terminals and should allow plenty of current. My DW300 has been in my car for 6-8 years, basically E85 only, and spent 2 years parked while I replaced the engine. It still works great and still looks new.
I had a DW200 in my car for 12 years. Only removed it because I crashed the car. After having two Walbaros lock up on me front sitting short periods of time. Once being only a few months. This DW200 sat for long periods of time over the past 4-5 years and ran perfectly everytime.
I've had fuel starvation issues with my DW200 that I haven't been able to root cause yet.
I've tried new OEM fuel socks, new Denso fuel socks, a DTP connector to ensure that the stock bulkhead wasn't going to burn out on me, and new fuel lines for the entire car. I've just put in a Radium fuel pump hangar that I have not been able to run yet, but we'll see in a couple months when I go out to test the car. I've read stuff about the fact that the DW pumps are turbine pumps that are really meant to be submerged in a more modern style fuel bucket, but I'm not sure how true that is.
I ran a DW200 and later a DW300 in my NA without issue. The 300 was on e85 almost exclusively. Got another DW300 in my NC currently and no issues yet, though I've run the car out of gas multiple times due to a fuel gauge refresh rate issue so maybe I'm tempting fate
