What filter is best filter: turbo NA8 stock internals oil filter options
Hello friends,
What would you recommend for an oil filter in my boosted 1997 na8 with stock internals. Can I go OEM? I've looked for other threads around this. I do 20% track, 80% (fun)street.
The usual choice for someone that thinks too much about this stuff is the "Millenia" filter. It's used on a lot of Japanese vehicles though. It's sort of funny to have the same filter on your 1.6L Mazda Miata and your 5.6L Nissan Titan. I've been running that size for years and noticed a tiny bit higher oil pressure when I first switched over.
For my first break in drives after my ongoing engine rebuild is complete, I want to try the 1347 filter mentioned in the linked thread.
We run Hondas filters are nearly everything. My 2020 civic, 2018 odyssey, 300hp na, my 2016 Kawasaki, many others. It’s a 2004 tsx, so the k24 filter. Roughly twice the filter length, measured internally, not just housing size.
Just for clarity's sake, the "Honda K24" filter is the same as the Millenia and Titan filter I previously mentioned. Pick your personal favorite flavor. I've used the Bosch 3323 and Purolator PL14610 so many times I have the part numbers memorized.
I have cut my intake manifold brace to clear the above longer filter when used with an oil cooler. I prefer this over removing it, but that's a whole different discussion.
Would you still have to cut that bracket with no sandwich plates? Something about the small filter and 5000 mile oil changes makes me feel iffy inside, these longer filters are the ticket in my book.
The Millenia/K24 filter will fit on any B6/BP engine with no mods. Past that, I don't know if your question includes the oil warmer for 1.8 engines, or what filter you want, but it's 3 bolts to remove the brace and a filter can be had for less than $10. It's not that hard or expensive to find out for yourself, or to cut your brace to suit. Don't want to risk wasting $10 if it doesn't fit and don't want to cut your brace? Leave the intake brace off for an oil change.
As Curly pointed out, the longer Millenia/K24 filter already has double the filter area of the original Miata filter. As I said, this filter is also factory specified on a DOHC 5.6L V8. Diminishing returns kicks in at some point. I mention the 1347 specifically because I want as little bypass as possible on the first start of a fresh engine. Since it's less common to find I doubt I'll run it as standard in the future.

Thanks for the reply! I have no need to take off the brace or go cut it, I am not THAT curious, just figured I would ask someone that may have more knowledge on the subject than I do at this moment.
The NA6 uses the same filter as the Millenia, wix 51356xp etc. The shorter filter was adopted for the later bp engines that have the heat exchanger.
For a high performance application you want a filter that is the least restrictive. Ideally you want a larger element, larger canister and a higher micron rating. Honda in the past has often spec’ed a low micron filter for most of their applications which is not ideal.
Another factor is the bypass pressure rating, higher is better. The Mazda filters are usually around 9-11dpsi. Another option for high perf use would be the fram racing hp17. It is in their high performance series which has a higher strength canister and a higher pressure relief at 16-28dpsi.
I run a stock filter and change it often. Real Mazda ones when the engine is brand new, wix after I am sure any break in garbage is gone, similar to Pat I would imagine.
