So on my NB track car I have had the rear bumper cover off for a long time, years really. I do not want the drag from the rear scoop shape of the bumper.
Lately while working on the car to make it street legal (which it is now) I wondered how it would look if I added the bumper cover back to the car. It looked a lot cleaner of course but I still do not want the rear scoop. Being inspired by a million episodes of the now gone car shows on Motortrend I decided to section the bumper so it would lose its parachute like characteristics but still look clean. It worked, and I have a vid on doing this...
Personally I like the look. It's probably a bit polarizing, but I always liked the rear bumpers on the 911 RSR's and this reminds me of that. I didn't watch the entire video so sorry if you explained it, but any reason not to do a simple bumper cut?
I gotta say, thats actually really cool. Nice work. That said, last I looked into this there was no data to show that the "parachute" effect on an na/nb is real. I forget where I read this, but some guy did a bunch of coast down tests and found it inconclusive. Not sure where the fast guys stand on this nowadays though, @emilio700 ?
I mean ditching the bumper and crash structure is good for weight for sure, but aero wise?
The parachute effect was debunked a few years back. The theory was that a bubble forms there kind of like the bed of a pickup truck, which causes the truck with the tailgate up to get better mileage than with it down.
That being said, I cut mine because I thought it looked cool.
Takes some serious fab skills to do that, awesome work! I went with a rear diffuser on mine. The rear end on yours looks a lot like an updated version of my SA RX7!
