My Electric Power Steering failed. Worked fine for till I hit a massive pothole. It was so bad it knocked my crank angle sensor out of alignment and killed the car. I was lucky enough to be on far right lane to roll to safety.
After I got towed and fixed the CAS, the power steering went wacky a few days later. It started rotating full tilt to the left. Next to a semi on the freeway doesn’t help.
Fortunately, the potentiometer was in arms reach; switched it off on the fly and went manual.
Apparently, this is rare, and has to do with the sensor. The kit has a small potentiometer to fine tune Left/Right bias. I tried that, but it didn’t work.
An email to the EPS kit manufacturer just replied with an unhelpful “make sure your harness is connected”. Well of course it is; it’s huge, I’ve driven with it for a year+, and the harness has a locking tab like any normal harness does.
More helpful YT technicians post videos on changing the sensor on different power steering units. Luckily, this is an easy swap. Unfortunately, you have to buy a whole unit. It’s all in the first plate that slides over the steering shaft. You’ll just need to track the 4 wire colors and positions.
Pics posted of color and position for reference.
I was curious why the original failed, so I dug a little further. The bad connection could’ve been anywhere, really. When I lifted the plate, one of these little magnetic thingies were pretty botched.
Unsure if this is the exact fix, but seems to have worked.
