Default 1994 with 2001 VVT Engine no start.

Recently installed a 2001 VVT Engine into my 1994 miata.

Followed the VVT Swap megathread for the installation and wiring.

Some notable features
- Flat Top Intake
- COP from 2001 Engine
- 2016 MSLabs ECU
- 99 fuel rail with upside down 93 FPR
- GM IAT Sensor
- 01-05 VVT Base Tune from TruboKitty.com

There is plenty of online info about the physical parts and installation, but almost nothing about the tune and tune settings.

All I request is that you guys look over my tune and data log to see if something is preventing the engine from starting.

Can see that all coils have spark through the spark test, engine slightly fires intermittenly when cranking and goes away when disabling injectors, so I assume I have fuel.
Thorugh the data log, the crank sensor and cam sensor appear to be working.

I appreciate any help I can get!

I haven’t looked at the logs or msq, but one of my go-to diagnostic steps with an engine that’s been fooled with and wants to start is to swap coils or wires to see if the timing is 180 degrees out.

Keep everything as it is, but swap the harness connectors between the two coil packs.

I appreciate the reply.

Checked the wiring and swapped the 2 coil pack connectors. Attempted to start the engine and cranking sounded much worse and out of time, backfiring and rough cranking.

Excellent idea but unfortunately not the issue.

A composite log would probably be helpful here. I did notice that your cam input is set to JS10 and not MS3x. I'm not sure which is correct for your board, but it might be worth switching that pin and seeing if it fires up.

Timing table is pretty ****, AFRs are a little lean, and the fan is coming on way too hot.

You may be dealing with the same issue I just gave advice for in another thread. Are you holding the key down the entire time during that log? If so, try changing cranking angle to -10 instead of 10, under ignition options.

Here's a 2nd and most recent composite log

I switched to MS3x and there was no spark.

Good idea but unfortunately doesn't work.

Yes, the key is being held down the entire time during the log. I changed the cranking angle but unfortunatly no difference.

The engine cranks over and sounds like it wants to start, but never successfully turns over.

You say that my timing table is bad, AFRs are lean and the fan is coming on too hot. I have a base tune from trubokitty.com for 01-05. Should I try a different base tune? Should I attempt a 94' base tune and adjust the settings for the different sensors?

Ideally I want to atleast get the engine running and drivable before I take the car to get dyno tuned, just want to make sure I did my work correctly before giving it to a tuner. I posted my most recent composite log in the thread (log 9) with the new settings.

I appreciate the help!

Are you on “use table” and not “fixed advance”?

A friend just finished their +turbo & speedyefi install and I was on the verge of posting about it in here for help because we couldn't get the car to fire at all; I registered this user name just for making a post about it.

We could hear the fuel pump turn on, injectors clicking over, and smell the raw gas after cranking. Spark was verified at all 4 plug wires. Mechanical timing was spot on with the #1 piston at TDC & the mark on the crank pulley matching that too. We even swapped a CAS from my own car to no avail

Turns out the cure was swapping the fancy irridium laser quantum plugs with a set of NGK copper spark plugs. That was all that it needed.
I hope your no-start turns out to be something as silly. gl

EDIT;

\/\/\/ 100% believe it! Wishing you hit your eureka moment soon! all the best \/\/\/

Sounds like a pain but happy to hear you guys figured it out! I'm hoping for something simple as well.

Believe it or not, I have tried 2 sets of plugs already too! Just gotta keep on testing.

Attempted both, same result.
