My rear brakes are... gone, and I have nice big wilwoods up front, and I've locked the fronts a couple times with the backs not doing enough.

Does anyone have a favorite pad, decently sticky and is ok running somewhat cold (not doing 4 laps before my important stop, this is "don't hit the lady and her stroller" thing).

I had some generic metal-master knock offs in there, and thought they were ok but now I'm less happy, maybe because they are old.

For that matter, I think these kuhmos are terrible in the straight, if it makes sense. Launching and braking are both way down from before, though turning seems ok, I guess. Still not impressed.

 

Axxis Ultimates are cheap as dirt and work pretty well.

 

I'd run a "Street" pad on the rear and get a proportioning valve to get it dialed in. Then you get bite and cold bite, and I doubt the rears will ever get hot enough to fade on you.

 

If its only for street driving and maybe autocross, the Ultimates aren't too bad. I run Hawk HP+ all around and take it out to track days. They are ok on the street, but dust pretty heavily. The HPS are a lighter duty pad which are supposed to dust less, but I have no experience with them.

I have HPS...they stop pretty good, great street pads. I'm def. trying a set of HP+ or a mixture of carbotechs when I go 1.8 brakes.

Er, let's see... (disappears to garage) Ecsta XS. They... Seem to be ok? Like, they start to slip easy, don't really recover, but it's predictable usable traction while slipping. One thing I'm a huge fan of - they are quiet! I mean - when you take a corner a bit hot, you have to worry there might be a cop around, but these, they don't squeal (pardon the pun) on you.

So, oddly, I'm happy with the handling, utterly not with the stopping and the launching. And they stink something aweful when you slide them.

It seems like maybe if they were shaved they would rock.

I hadn't heard of them before so I looked them up. Those are the new replacements for the ecsta mx which I liked quite a bit. One of the things I liked about them was the price. That still looks pretty good.

 

Yeah - I'd heard of them as killers for the T1R and Azenis I was running. So far, I don't think so. It just seems like a sportier tires for your grocery getter. Too many changes at once, though, so it's hard to judge.

I had Axxiss Ultimates before these and they were GARBAGE. I also burned through them in less then 1000 miles of street driving, what the **** is that?

 

So, what I'm hearing you say is Hawk HP+.

 

they're going to squeek and make lots of dust, but they stop when cold and can take 94whp at hallett on a 1.6 when driving with extreme anger. R-comps would have pushed me over the limit on that pad on the track, but they're great on the street.

 

Got the HP+'s in yesterday, they seem nice! It's hard to judge rear brakes, but I think while breaking them in I kept having the rears lock up first.

I blame the tires. :-)

Anyway, I may need to get better pads for the wilwoods now, thankfully they've come up with several pads in their "smart pad" line up now.

 

I'd second the axxis ultimates. They're cheap and they work. They make a lot of dust, though. I run EBC greenstuff pads on the street, and I've had no complaints. They're a good street pad, and they're tough enough for an auto-x. I wouldn't try to run em at the track, though.

I can't stop at all now. Touching the pedal makes the backs lock while the fronts are still free spinning. I should get wussier pads for the rear, but being an upgradoholic, perhaps getting stickier pads for the front is the way to go.

Is there an easy way to get enough information about the HP+'s that I can get something equivalent for the wilwood's up front and even this out? I like how fast the brakes feel, I just wish my car stopped instead of fishtailing.
