When I had my rx7 I had a very noticable difference with the ground wire kit on. Better mid range acceleration and alot smoother idle. Has anybody messed around with them or different locations?

 

yes, we have. I picked-up 40whp.

In all seriousness, ground wire kits do help slightly but better off making your own.

 

ground wire kits only help if you have a ground problem. still, go to a welding supply place and buy a few feet of 2/0 cable. it's about the diameter of your pinky. then buy some large copper eyelets that fit 2/0 cable. strip, crimp in vise, and bolt to your chassis and motor. voila.

actually mcmaster carries both pieces... cable's about $4/ft. Lugs are a buck or two.

 

I replaced the corroded old ground strap on the hotside of the engine with a $7 pre-made battery cable from AutoZone. Does that count?

I replaced my engine ground strap with a huge gauge cable and it helped me get stable idle back and sorted the funniest rev counter problem but no power any that my butt dyno noticed

 

You would be right. I'm guilty of being a stupid bastard once when I was younger and I purchased an HKS ground kit for my Prelude. The gain if any was so minor I can count it off as placebo effect. Headlight were a bit brighter and idle may have smoothed a bit. I do need to fix my electrical system though. Ground strap on the hot side is kind of ratty and the ground cable on the battery is bad, the end is about to fall off with only half of the strands holding it on. Maybe I will do that today. I have plenty of spare wire and ends.

 

just go in and replace your strap-on.

I think they look good, no plastic to melt (like a lot of those stupid aftermarket 20 point ground kits), and it works fine. You can pick them up cheap at almost any auto parts store.

 

adding redundant grounds to any vehicle will help it out. the gains vary from make to make and vehicle to vehicle. Adding these grounds will smooth out sensor readings, and put less strain on the entire electrical system. hell it even helps out alot with electolysis in the coolin system.

If anybody works on vehicles for a living like I do knows that a single bad ground can play funny with alot of different systems. the extra grounds just kinda help all that out. case and point the mid to late 90's maxima has a problem with the mating surface of the bell housing to the engine and that bad ground will prevent the vehicle from starting.

 

A bad ground can hurt a lot of things, this is common knowledge guy. But spending close to $200 on an Hks Circle Earth kit is a waste of money and can be accomplished much cheaper, that is the point we are making!

 

Almost upgraded mine yesterday, just because the hotside is old and crappy. I decided to wait until I could run to auto parts store today and grap quality eyelets.

Not hard to do...one screw and one bolt, and can be done better/cheaper than any kit.
