Anyone gutted a 01+ intake manifold?
How much different is it than the 99-00 mani's? Can't be that much different. I would think that it would be somewhat the same. If I were to do this I would want to get my hands on a spare as well. Do the mod and then swap it in. Wish I had a reason to do it. Don't think it would help much on a NA car.

the inside is very different.
99-00

01

note the very different resonance chamber in the 01. the 99 has butterflies that only open to a chamber, not the path to the head.
the 01 has butterflies that close down (Not totally) the runners to the head. it's also got a fixed chamber you can see at the top.
The 01 doesn't have any obvious gutting to be done. it's all straight runners really. If anything, you'd remove the butterflies in the runners. I forget what the top half looks like but i think it's mostly open and leads into the four runner holes at the top.

I was thinking of doing this to the msp but does it affect your idle or how your car runs on a cold start?
For the 01+ it looks like you would just have to take the butterflys off and that's it.

So then would a ported 01+ manifold without the butterfly's be an upgrade option for us 99-00 guys?
I'm sure its not anywhere near the custom manifolds, but say if a 99 owner was to happen to get ahold of an 01+ manifold, "gutting it" would be way easier and possibly more effective?

Many have gutted the upper intake on the 99-00, but I've been thinking about gutting the lower part as well. Basically cutting out the butterflys and whatnot and making that whole area into a big plenum, and essentially shortening the runners a bit as well.

I'm still unsatisfied that the gutting of the 99 is the right thing to do.
I dont have a manifold to photograph, that's from solomiata. Ask abefm, i think he's got some manifolds around.

If there's anyone local to me that's interested in trying this, let me know. I have a manifold that I'm not using that the main chamber is already partially hacked up that I will donate to the cause.
From the few gutted ones we've seen the gains are somewhere in the 2-3 to 5hp gain. I think Ive seen 7 from one. To me that doesn't justify the amount of time and effort gutting the damn things though. Just imo

Here are some pics that a friend just sent me of a 99/00 gutted/throated.
I'm thinking a lot of material can be removed from the 01+ to achieve a large plenum/short runner intake manifold.

I gutted my my 99 and I am not so sure I am happy with it. I believe it has hurt my spool.
I know if didnt hurt others on here, but my goal is different too. Very top end is not necessarily my goal.
I did it because on many of the dynos I saw they werent hurt much on the spool end and it seemed to help carry the power and not dip so bad.
I have not gotten my car back from the dyno yet. It should have a very solid tune on it coming back. So I will see how the gt2871r spools up.

Here's a pic of my gutted 99 manifold vs the stock manifold:

Here's the dyno comparison of the 2 done on the same day. VICS not operational.

11 hp and 1 torque peak gain.
This Gutted 99 manifold is currently for sale if anyone wants it.
