I'm taking my car to get inspected for some oil leaks I'm thinking it might just need some new seals. not sure, here's my question average costs to get that fixed car runs fine no overheating, oil pressure seems fine, and the leak is small but seems like its been there sometime. I'm not a mechanic and are just beginning to dip my feet with this car any advice would be great thanks.

 

where is the leak coming from? Cam seals and crank seal are the most common

 

+1 on where it's from. It could be as simple as tightening the oil drain bolt or as PITA as pulling the motor to replace the oilpan gasket.

 

if your good with your hands and have basic metric tools there are some great how-tos if you go to a shop the parts are cheap but the labor will get you.

 

That's what I'm afraid of I talked to a friend today and he says he can do it but if he has to pull the whole engine out it wont be cheap.

 

and the leak is small in the rear top of the engine and the oil pan seems like its spilled a lot in the past. Just got this car BTW.

 

rear top near the valve cover? if so that is just a valve cover gasket and some RTV around the CAS (cam angle sensor). The first step would be to clean and degrease the engine and then find out for sure where the leak is coming from. If the leak is that small and youre low on funds you should be able to pass inspection right after the cleaning/degreasing.

One option would be to not care.

Old cars leak oil. Fact of life. Unless you make a habit of engaging in sexual congress on the same part of the garage floor where you park the car, I just wouldn't be all that bothered about a bit of oil dripping out of the engine.
