Default 1.6 ID How - To

How can you tell the differences between a 5 speed 1.6 and one from an automatic from the exterior only. It has a number stamped into it next to the B6 on the right side next to trans flange that is 704452, can it be translated? Any help would be appreciated!

Easiest way is to look at the throttle body. Specifically, the throttle position sensor.

The 1.6 M/T cars got a three-pin TPS with a square body, while the A/T cars got a rounded four-pin TPS. This applies only to North American '90-'93 engines- you didn't specify your location, and I believe that the later Euro-sped 1.6 engines got the same TPS as the 1.8s regardless of transmission.

the engine sits without manifolds. it has balancer, water pump pulley and there is no flywheel or flexplate. there is stamped numbers below the B6 the read 704452. This motor came from japan, and sold in california w/ less than 40,000 miles on it.

So what do you want to know? If the engine came with an automatic or manual from the factory? Like Joe said, with no information on where you are, what year car...etc we can't really help you.

i understand. I was just thinking that the numbers would translate to a "1992 1.6 w/ 100 hp and 100ft/lb for a auto Miata", but i guess Mazda doesn't do that with the stamped numbers.

I'm not aware of there being any "intelligence" to the block serial number. I could be wrong, I've just never seen anything which said otherwise.

Is the VIN code on the oil pan still intact?

You can call mazda. They might be able to tell you where it came from. I read that they can give you the engine stamp number from the the VIN, but maybe not vice versa.
