I've searched all over the net and couldn't find nothing and hoping to figure out my problem.

When shifting, there's a metal clank sound coming from the rear end of the car somewhere, happens as I let the clutch out. It'll also make it when reversing as well.

Only noticed the noise when I put a new clutch in which required removal of the gearbox, prop shaft and PPF frame.

The noise is like taking two metal spatulas and smacking them against one another.

I've crawled underneath to check all the bolts are tight, the U-joints in the prop shaft appears fine, not loose and no slack.
I've also been driving it for the past 6 months so far with this noise and so far nothing has broken and everything seems like its working fine, but just this noise, its irritating me

Really stumped at what it could be, I've got a 1.6 viscous LSD which I'm suspecting its on its way out but I'd like to pinpoint the root cause of this sound.

I've got a similar mystery noise which I can't pinpoint. Your only solution really is to shake ---- around back there until you find whats making the noise. Even that hasn't found much of anything for me.

 

I've been shaking everything I could possibly think of and nothing seems out of the ordinary

 

Put it on jack stands and turn the wheels aggressively to see if you can duplicate the noise at the rear. If you feel adventurous, have a friend run the car forward and back while you have the wheels up and your head near the rear, away from the driveshaft and wheels.

 

So your saying that this noise only happens while the clutch is being used, while the clutch is in motion? Or is it happening just after torque is applied, after the peddle is released?

Drive the car by somone standing out side the car. They should be able to tell you from what end of the car its comming from. This will speed the ID of your problem.

Since you say you just put a new clutch kit in, it makes me think your now stressing the old parts farther down. The diff might not like all the "new" power and or the diff mounts may be shot and are now moving enough to click/clack.

 

I think you could be right Miater, I put a Exedy Heavy Duty. It seems to be making the noise when torque is applied not when clutch in motion.

Do you think the diff could have torn its bushings and smacking around in the subframe?

I've tried this and cannot replicate the sound. I'm jet to try putting it up into the air but it seems more safer to put the car onto a hoist than putting it on jackstands and getting somebody to crawl underneath..

 

Check the rear wheel bearings.
