Default 1.8 drive shafts CV splines compatibility

So I bought these half shafts for a 1.8 diff conversion and when I got home, I noticed that something was missing, god damm seller only gave me half the shafts and he split them at the CV shafts just before the hub.

When I got around to getting back to him, he had sold off the shell which the subframes and wheel hubs went with..

Now he claims that when he bought these 1.8 shafts, he went to pull his 1.6 shafts and found that his shafts were frozen into the hub and that he couldn't get them out, so he split them at the CV joint, pulled half of the 1.6 shaft out and slid the 1.8 shafts straight in. He didn't sound very confident about it for a job he only did a couple of months ago so I'm asking if this would work before I start pulling my car down.

Does the 1.8 and 1.6 half shafts share the same splines?

Cheers,
Martin

I'm pretty sure (but I might be mistaken) that this procedure can actually be done. I say give it a try and document the process.

That's a crazy way to do it but might actually work. That being said, I am pretty sure the 1.8 shafts are a good deal thicker than 1.6.

I know my shafts are pretty much permanently attached to the knuckles.

Comparing the shaft pictured above against a 1.6, they're identically the same, just that the 1.8 is shorter by about half a inch. I'll take some photos tomorrow morning, I'm stuck at separating the CV joint from the splines of the 1.6 shaft. Just can't figure out how it comes apart. I know that there's a circlip at the end of the splines but I don't know how to get to it. Any ideas?
