Anyone know what the screws holding the oil pump gear cover should be torqued to? I cant find it in the FSM, Haynes Manual, or the Chiltons Manual.

 

It's in the Haynes manual, I know that. Don't know them off the top of my head though. Chapter 2a or 2b me thinks.

 

I might be looking at it wrong, it says

Oil pump bolts
Oil pump strainer
Rear cover screws....69-95 in lbs.
Rocker arm shafts...

I was thinking the "Rear cover screws" meant the bolts for the rear main seal cover. What is the rear main seal cover torqued to then?

 

Until the vice grips start slipping.

 

The Protege FSM (same pump) says 52-78 in-lbs.

Just to clarify, I'm working on a 93 BP from a protege, I've been trying to get the engine together and looking at different things at the same time, so I'm a little confused. The chiltons manual is old, its for 90-93 323/protege/mx3/mx6/626/miatas, and some of the things it says doesn't jive with my haynes manual. The fsm I have is for a 92 protege I was looking at it yesterday and must have missed that. I've bought 30lbs worth of books for this car, and I'm just doing the best I can, so thanks for your help, it really is appreciated.


My chiltons manual says 52-78, but the haynes says 69-95.

And I still can't find the torque spec for the rear main oil seal cover bolts.

 

the chiltons and haynes for the protege both have wrong tq specs compared to the fsm

The "rear cover" is the timing belt cover behind the timing belt. The one with the "E" and the "I" on it for timing purposes.

where can i find info on rebuilding a motor? what books do you recommend and where can i buy or print a copy? Im in the same boat will be assembling a motor soon so i will need the torque specs for a 1.6

 

I used Rod Grainger's manual, all the info you need to rebuild a motor and more.

 

guys that's awesome, I really appreciate the help! I called the haynes manual, they're totally clueless and refuse to admit they're wrong. The guy could not get it through his head there is a "rear cover" for the rear main seal, and a rear cover for the oil pump, and kept confusing himself because he thought I was asking for oil pump/rear main tq specs. He tried to tell me they didn't list oil pump rear cover screws because it's not part of a regular rebuild and they don't go into assembly/disassembly details, until I told him to check pg 2b-7(i think) where it says to refer to tq specs in 2a.........anyway, after trying to talk to the guy I just hung up. I'm just about done with haynes, if it wasn't for the pictures ....zzz

and for the record, they actually used a miata block when they wrote the protege manual, proof is in the pics.
